Book A Hotel

In this post I pick the best luxury, romantic resorts for couples in Asia. Places perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries, Valentines or just to escape from the daily grind.

1. Keemala Phuket, Thailand

Keemala (pictured above) is a gorgeous new hotel, nestled amidst lush flora on the rainforest encrusted hills of Phuket. It screams romance. Candle-lit dinners happen in intimate dining pods next to a cascading waterfall. Private villas offer huge four-poster beds, outdoor bath tubs and private lap pools.

All rooms overlook the rainforest, mountains and Andaman Sea, and if you get fed up with the romance, you can relax with other equally blessed guests, by the resort’s main freeform pool and Jacuzzi which is flanked with sun loungers.

Keemala is just 3-minutes shuttle from Kamala Beach and not far from the liveliness of Patong Beach, but feels a world away. In fact this luxury resort is often compared to Avatar’s Pandora and the Shire from Lord of the Rings. It is a paradise that must be experienced.

Keemala Phuket also features in best romantic hotels and resorts for couples in Thailand and best wilderness resorts in Asia.

2. Amanpuri Phuket, Thailand

It is no secret that I love Aman Hotels. You can read about my recent trip to Aman Grand Canale Venice which was also utterly romantic.

Amanpuri is tucked away in Surin beach alongside the holiday homes of the rich and famous on Phuket. The beach can only be reached via the hotel or by boat, keeping it almost completely private.

A towering Thai pavilion sits at the Amanpuri’s centre, fringed by lush jungle and facing onto a vast black-tiled swimming pool with a glorious view of the Andaman Sea. A stone staircase leads to Pansea beach, a rustic-chic restaurant, more swimming pools, a water sports centre and tennis courts. An excellent spa is tucked away on the other side of the resort, overlooking Bang Tao Beach.

Amanpuri’s rooms exude Thai elegance. Garden pavilions are secluded, with a walled garden, sunken bath, and outdoor shower. Pavilions 103 and 105 have the most striking sea views. Pick a Garden Pool Pavilion for utterly private dips in your own plunge pool.

3. Soneva Fushi Resort, Maldives

Soneva Fushi Resort is located in the stunning Baa Atoll island archipelago, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Villas are hidden among dense tropical foliage and are the stuff of romantic Robinson Crusoe fantasies with many are built to resemble tree houses. All open to their own private stretch of sugar white sands, and most boast their own private seawater swimming pools. Service is provided by Mr./Ms. Friday butlers.

Activities include a Six Senses spa, private beach with water sports facilities, bikes to borrow, observatory, open-air cinema, floodlit tennis court, badminton, snooker table, group yoga and tai chi classes, jogging trail, board games, ice-cream parlour, library, stash of CDs and DVDs, free Wi-Fi.

Soneva Fushi Resort also features in our top 5 best romantic honeymoon hotels in the Maldives with private pools.

4. COMO Point Yamu Resort, Phuket, Thailand

Point Yamu by COMO is a luxury resort located at the tip of Cape Yamu overlooking the Andaman Sea and the dramatic limestones of Phang Nga Bay. Interiors by Italian designer Paola Navone offer a unique expression of contemporary Thai luxury. Facilities include a COMO Shambhala wellness retreat and two world-class restaurants for Thai and Italian cuisine.

The Verandah Pool Suites each have a four-poster bed, a living room, a verandah with comfy loungers, and a private aqua-tiled infinity pool, where you can watch the sun rise. The impressive main infinity pool has sun loungers overlooking Phang Nga Bay; lie back and enjoy the fruity icy poles that are regularly brought to guests. The pool is perched by La Sirena restaurant where you can order lunch to your sun bed.

The cliffside location of this hotel means spectacular Andaman Sea views but not direct access to a private beach. However the resort does have a private COMO Beach Club, 40 minutes by complimentary boat shuttle from the hotel.

Point Yamu by COMO also features in best luxury hotels with private infinity pools in Thailand.

5. Moyo Island, Amanwana, Indonesia

For a stay where every little detail has been carefully orchestrated, the Aman Group’s luxury resorts are difficult to beat. Amanwana is set on the coast of Moyo Island, an unspoiled nature and marine reserve to the east of Bali. With a shoreline of 88 km (54 miles), it’s larger than other private islands, giving you plenty of space to roam. If you can pull yourself away from the open-air spa or freshwater pool, you’ll find jungle trails that might lead to encounters with the island’s wild boar, deer or macaques.

Only 20 tents dot the island, some sat on the sand with direct access to the Flores Sea, others surrounded by jungle so verdant that wild birds regularly land on the balconies. The tents may have a pitched canvas ceiling, but they also enjoy air-conditioning, hardwood floors and expansive bathrooms.

Amanawa also features in top 6 private islands in Southeast Asia. You may also be interested in our top 10 white sand beaches in the world.
