Aman is often considered the world’s most exclusive hotel brand, over and above any other luxury hotels. Expect an ultra-high-end experience at these hotels, along with an even more amazing experience on the Aman private jet trips.
Many luxury hotel addicts refer to their love of Aman hotels by describing themselves as “Aman Junkies”. You will find numerous pages and threads in the luxury hotel forum on FlyerTalk dedicated to reviews and discussions about the merits of various Aman hotels. Amanjunkies have a deep passion for this brand, and many don’t holiday anywhere else.
Why Aman?
The first-ever Aman was born in 1988 in Phuket. Named Amanpuri, meaning ‘place of peace,’ this hotel started a revolution in luxury, and today, there are more than 30 ultra-luxe hotels in 20 countries. Aman hotels do more than offer a guarantee of room quality and service. They offer a whimsical design, integrating the character of the local area with ultra-luxury furnishings.
If you stay at the Aman Canal Grande in Venice, you are actually staying in a historic palace!
Unlike a more generic luxury hotel brand like the Four Seasons, Aman’s don’t always offer the full spread of amenities because they tend to be boutique properties rather than 100+ room monsters. Taking the Aman Canal Grande as an example, there is no pool here or kids club or club lounge. I am not sure if there was a gym or not. It could have been hidden away down one of the many windy corridors. What it does offer is the ambiance of a private members club overlooking the main canal in Venice.
Like most Aman hotels, You won’t get non-guests at this property as the gates are locked and monitored by a camera. If you are not recognized, you can’t come in!
All Aman properties ooze character, but the fact that this particular hotel is missing the crucial facility of the pool means that it is worth checking each Aman individually to check that it has the facilities you require. Certainly, in Venice, I marginally prefer the Belmond Cipriani, which has an enormous pool, so you can sit out and enjoy the sunshine. Aman Canal Grande has a tiny outdoor garden and is not a place to laze for the day.
This level of ultra-high quality guarantees you an enjoyable stay at any Aman hotel around the world, whatever room you book. Communal areas are also always immaculate, and the staff are always welcoming and often address you by your name and will charge your drinks and sundries to your room without even asking your room number!
Why I Love A Aman Hotel
When you are tired and in an unfamiliar part of the world that is far from home, an Aman hotel will make you feel comfortable and safe. The staff will know where the nearest pharmacy or doctor is. They will have a supply of any toiletries that you forgot. They will cater to your child who refuses to eat an egg because “there are black bits in it” (pepper), even if that means redelivering a different version of the same meal twice. But unlike Four Seasons hotels, they are not particularly big on kids’ clubs and “facilities” instead of being more adult with a room with its own plunge pool priority.
How About Other Luxury Chains?
I tend to feel Aman Hotels, Leading Hotels Of The World, Belmond, and Four Seasons hotels offer pretty much the top-level luxury for hotels. I am also a fan of Langham Hotels, particularly their London property and Park Hyatts. The hotel you should choose really depends on what you are after in terms of facilities and the price.
For example, you find Leading Hotels of the World in most major cities, whereas Aman might be only present in some of the main ones like Tokyo, plus a new Aman is coming to New York. Other major cities like Paris, Milan, Los Angeles, and, of course, resort areas like Hawaii do not offer Aman hotels. In these locations, Four Seasons often offer the best bet.
Having stayed at all of these brands, all these hotel chains have their merits, but there is no doubt that Aman Hotels offers some of the finest hotels, resorts, and residence clubs at each location.
Aman Hotels vs. Four Seasons?
Aman hotels tend to be one of the most special brands of hotels and tend to offer smaller boutique hotels rather than 100+ room palaces. But do remember this tends to be reflected in the price. Aman hotels tend to be the most expensive of these chains. Aman hotels usually have more of an individual personality than Four Seasons hotels, as they are more directly immersed in the local surroundings. But they can miss out on crucial facilities like kids’ clubs, pools, and club lounges when compared to a similar Four Seasons hotel.
Leading Hotels of the World vs. Aman?
Leading Hotels of the World also guarantees a certain level of luxury with local staff and tonnes of character. When we stay at the Hotel Hermitage, our favorite hotel in Monaco, there is no doubt that you are on the Cote D’Azur in the center of Monte Carlo.
It just feels French. The rooms within the hotel differ in size, some with views, some without. The major advantage of Leading Hotels Of The World is that there are so many in pretty much every city. The Aman experience is likely to have the edge over Leading Hotels, but you are far less likely to find an Aman hotel in a convenient location.
How Does The Price Compare?
The price of Leading Hotels of the World hotels and resorts varies massively, particularly when comparing times of the season as you can pick up some really cheap rates at these Leading hotels and also at some Four Seasons hotels out of season. In contrast, the price of Aman hotels tends to be much more consistent, with rooms rarely discounted. Instead, Aman hotels sometimes offer three-for-the-price-of-two or four-for-three packages in the low season.
But how do you work out which room to book? How do you know whether the restaurant is good? How do you know if the bar is any good and worth spending the evening?
You see, because Leading Hotels of the World are not Aman hotels, the overall product is inconsistent, and some are much better than others.
Aman hotels will always have wonderful large rooms (even the base rooms are great), great bar area, delicious restaurants, and are consistently even better than excellent!

Is It Worth Booking Your Aman room Via Your Credit Card?
When you own an American Express or a Citi Prestige credit card, you can book almost any Aman hotel via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts. The benefits are not usually as good as those you will get by booking via our luxury travel concierge.
