United’s Slow Polaris Seat Roll Out Frustrates Passengers

We have all been super excited about United’s magnificent new Polaris Business Class seat. Launched in 2017 the groundbreaking Polaris Business Class offers great news seats, cabin and service. We have reviewed all the flights we have taken in United Polaris Business Class below.

United now offers a Polaris “soft” service which includes an improved menu and bedding, across its entire fleet. The new seats are, however, not available across many of United’s planes yet. In fact, booking a United plane with the new Polaris configuration is currently almost as unlikely as discovering a unicorn’s poo.

In the spring, United said they’d accelerate the pace to an average of one new Polaris plane every 10 days, but this ‘average’ is over a period of years, and so far, the average appears to be based on a plan that speeds up at the back end of the 5 years. Either that or they do not appear to be hitting their schedule. The result, frustrated passengers on old seats!

You will find these Polaris seats on 14 777-300ERs and United’s retrofitted 767s. There is one of these planes on the from Newark to London route and we think this is the best Business Class seat offered transatlantic if you can catch this particular plane.

This trip report reviews my transatlantic flight on United Airlines B787-9 Dreamliner Polaris Business Class from Paris to San Francisco. This flight took place in August 2017 from Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) in France to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in the USA. United's new Business Class concept, 'Polaris', launched in December 2016, was offered on this flight. United's Boeing 787-9 planes do not feature the new Polaris forward-facing pods yet, as these are currently only found on the carrier's brand new B777-300ER and some retrofitted B767-300ER aircraft.

I have already detailed the best airlines to fly First Class to Hawaii. United Airlines calls its domestic Business Class product 'First Class', or 'United First'. The domestic service is not as extensive and refined as on intercontinental flights.

United launched its new Polaris Business Class in December 2016, replacing their BusinessFirst; and Polaris First replacing Global First cabins. The brand new United Polaris Pod concept is the company’s most drastic product transformation in more than a decade.

In this trip report, I review United Polaris First Class Frankfurt to San Francisco (SFO) on a Boeing 747-400. United launched its new Polaris First Class, replacing its Global First cabins. United Polaris First will eventually be phased out and replaced but the new United Polaris Business Class seat, but until the Polaris, Business Seat is installed on all United's planes, the Polaris First will remain available for booking.
