3. Westin Palace Madrid
For the opulent glamour that the Spanish city of Madrid demands, why not stay in the beautiful Westin Palace Madrid. We visited recently and were charmed by the hotel for its central rooms, location, and stunning pièce de resistance – the stained glass domed restaurant.
The Westin Palace Madrid is located in the heart of the city, known as the Art Triangle. You are near the gorgeously green Retiro Park and Prado Museum. This Art Walk is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List as “Paisaje de la Luz” (The Light Landscape) and connects the city’s three most famous art galleries: El Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza. You are also in a great location to sample some of the city’s best Tapas bars, with many restaurants and bars lining the neighboring streets.
If you are reaching the hotel by public transport, Banco de España and Sevilla metro stations are just a short walk from Atocha railway, one of the main stations, just slightly further at around a 5-minute walk. The hotel is about 30 minutes by car from Madrid Airport.
When you decide to stay at the Westin Palace Madrid, you know the absolute highlight will be the stunning stained-glass domed roof that adorns their restaurant. You enter the hotel from the street into a large reception and lobby area. This elegant space has an enormous stand-out chandelier, an original from 1912, and oversized frescos on the walls.
You are drawn up the wide staircase into a marble space that houses the lifts and a second stunning, sweeping curved staircase, but here, your eye is tempted away for that domed roof is peeking at you! You are led straight into La Rotonda Restaurant, your eyes pulling you forward and upwards, and wow!
The doomed roof is truly magnificent, a thing of pure beauty. The surrounding restaurant space aims to complement, not steal, attention, and a combination of teal, ochre, and purple with lots of velvet and gentle patterns coupled with the immense natural light that floods that restaurant from the roof above creates a truly beautiful vibe.
The exterior of the hotel doesn’t disappoint either. Commissioned by King Alfonso XIII in 1912, the building spans an entire block. The Westin Palace has held an iconic place in Madrid’s hotel scene since its heyday, and architecturally, it’s easy to see why. The Belle Époque period is perfectly represented outside as well as in. The hotel has always been a celeb favorite, too, since those very early days, and now the walls inside are adorned with photos of past guests – you rather long for those walls to talk.
The Westin Palace Madrid has 470 guest rooms and 51 suites. The recently renovated classic rooms are spacious and decorated in a calming color palette of greys and yellow with an Art Deco nod. The infamous Westin Heavenly Beds are just that. The ensuite bathrooms offer both a bath and shower with all the usual extras in a luxury hotel.
To sit where the famed once tread, Ernest Hemingway and Salvador Dalí frequently frequent the bar and sample a cocktail or two at the 1912 Museo Bar. Here, dark green leather chairs match the dark wood paneling to create a sophisticated, speakeasy mood. The hotel is also home to the independently-run Asia Gallery, which serves gourmet Cantonese cuisine, and the Green T Sushi Bar for a Japanese and Spanish fusion to your tapas.

4. Hotel Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques
Hotel Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques is a lavish refurbished 19th-century palace with a prime location in the heart of Madrid. Perhaps the highlight here is the seasonal rooftop pool overlooking the Royal Palace.
This hotel is located on a peaceful street just steps from the action, including the Teatro Real Opera House and Opera metro station, which is a minute’s walk away. The Royal Palace is nearby, and there are tonnes of local bars and restaurants within staggering distance.
This beautiful hotel combines two historic buildings. A 13th-century convent and the 19th-century Palace of Dukes of Granada de Ega, both updated in an avant-garde style.
This hotel still feels palatial and has plenty of original features, even though it has undergone extensive renovation. The building is housed in a magnificent Elizabethan façade with black, imposing cast-iron gates lining the entrance.
All the rooms and communal areas are set around a central courtyard area, which offers seating areas shaded by parasols, decked areas with relaxed rattan seating, and plenty of trees and greenery. It all feels very regal, with beautifully pruned hedge blobs on top of chunky flower pots, seemingly saluting your presence like porcelain soldiers with leafy heads.
The seasonal rooftop pool and decking, which is spattered with sunbeds, offers amazing panoramic views across the city overlooking the Royal Palace, the Almudena Cathedral, and the famous Austrias district and towards the mountains beyond. This is a wonderful place to plant yourself for a few hours to relax properly.
Although the pool is too small for exercise, it is a great spot to cool down. You can also warm up in a rooftop pool bar, which provides a prime location for the rooftop hot tub where you can enjoy the sunset.
Downstairs, the communal areas are also regal in style, awash with pillars, archways, chandeliers, and high ceilings. Once again, the color scheme is creams and chocolate browns, and bookcases separate silky seating areas where you can enjoy a drink or a bite to eat.
The courtyard is the largest area for relaxing, munching, or both. This spectacular 1,000m² historic garden is full of life and a unique and peaceful haven in the heart of Madrid.
The rooms here offer a mix of styles. Some seem modern, decorated in shades of chocolate with rather imposing reproductions of Diego Velázquez’s paintings behind the bed. Others are more traditional, with multi-paned windows and intricate detailing carved into the ceiling. All are refurbished and feel new.
