When should you ask for a late checkout? Ask when you book. Then ask again when you checkin, and if the answer is still no, ask again 24 hours before checkout. Hotel occupancy is unpredictable, and it’s just possible that the hotel can jiggle their rooms about to make this happen to you. You may also find some reservation agents who may be more generous with their time and persistence in making this happen for you, so by asking repeatedly, you may eventually hit on an agent who can work their magic for you.
Some hotels offer online check-in services that allow you to specify your preferences, including a late checkout request before you arrive, so it is worth looking out for this option or asking your agent to look out for it.

Don’t rely on impersonal automated requests. The personal touch always works better. The higher your membership tier, the more priority the hotel will likely give to your late checkout.
Four Seasons Hampshire Review
The first time we reviewed Four Seasons Hampshire was back in 2016, and following a return visit, I feel compelled to share exactly why this hotel is hands down the best family hotel in the English Countryside. The Four Seasons Hampshire is set in a beautifully restored Georgian Manor on a 500-acre estate in the English countryside. The hotel is only just over an hour from central London by car and just 10 minutes from Fleet railway station (with a train service to London Waterloo Station four times an hour).

If your room is free the following night, the hotel might consider offering you a discounted nightly rate if you simply need to use the room into the early evening.

Hotels are more likely to gift late checkouts when occupancy is low, which may be in low season or maybe on a Sunday night. If you book outside the main season, late checkout will likely happen.
