Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, and there are some beautiful hotels to choose from in this vibrant city. Our top 5 best hotels include the Hyatt Centric, Sofitel, Cala di Volpe & Alma Historica Boutique hotels, and Bit Design Hotel.
With direct flights from Miami, Madrid, and Paris or via local hubs Santiago, Lima, and Buenos Aires, the city are easy to reach – you can even use Avios to fly with Iberia on Avios. The city revolves around the Plaza de la Independencia, leading to the old town with art deco buildings and Spanish colonial homes. The Solis Theatre is the oldest in South America, and there are numerous cinemas reflecting Montevideo’s stars as the center of Uruguay’s film industry. At 27 km, The Rambla is one of the longest esplanades in the world and an important part of the life of the town. Perfect for posing, walking, or even rollerskating at any time of day.
1. Hyatt Centric Montevideo
Ideally located in the charming Pocitos area, just steps from beautiful sandy beaches, the Hyatt Centric (pictured above) is ideal for travelers who appreciate modern design and top service. Rooms at the hotel start at a very generous 37-45 m² and feature a separate seating area with floor-to-ceiling windows. Deluxe rooms are larger and feature a kitchenette. It is well worth paying a little extra for a Club Room, which provides access to the lounge with a light breakfast, evening drinks, and canapés included – for diamond members of Hyatt Gold Passport, this benefit is included when booking all room types.
To burn off the delicious food from the hotel’s restaurants, there is a well-equipped gym, or you can enjoy a jog along the Rambla pathway, which runs along the Uruguayan coast. For something more relaxing, the hotel has an indoor heated pool, relaxation area, and massage suite.
2. Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa
The Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa is a recently renovated grand dame of a hotel originally built in 1821. It is located right on the ocean road and across from the beach. The hotel is a 20-minute drive from the center of the city and 10 minutes from the airport. The lobby and entrance are impressive, the restaurant is in the old ballroom, and the rooms are gracious, chic, and modern, even the base small ones. Many rooms have a great view of the ocean, but bring earplugs as these rooms do suffer from road noise.
Breakfast at the Sofitel is tasty and generous. In the evening, you can enjoy á la carte French dishes at the restaurant or relax with a drink and live music at the bar. There is also a wonderful spa and gym, and both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The Sofitel is a great choice for travelers interested in a peaceful location with beach walks.
3. Alma Historica Boutique Hotel
Housed in an art nouveau mansion across the street from a park, this stylish boutique hotel is a 13-minute walk from Plaza Independencia, the city’s historic main square. The uniquely themed rooms, inspired by famous Uruguayans, feature Egyptian cotton sheets, smart TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Upgraded rooms have balconies and views of the park and street, while suites add sitting areas and private terraces. 4.Cala di Volpe Boutique Hotel
Across the street from a beach, this casual hotel is 2 km from the National Museum of Visual Arts and 4 km from Zoológico Municipal Villa Dolores. Bright, laid-back rooms come with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Upgraded rooms add living areas, while suites have separate sitting rooms with desks or balconies with dining space. Enjoy free parking, bike rentals, and breakfast. There is an informal restaurant, a bar, and a fitness center with a sauna and beach views, as well as a seasonal hot tub.
5. Bit Design Hotel
Bit Design Hotel in Montevideo is a gem of a boutique hotel located in a fantastic area full of restaurants and bars, but some distance away from the city center. The hotel is modern, with large rooms and great bathrooms. Just a few blocks walk from the waterfront, shopping areas, and more cool bars, you will find plenty to do. The rooms do not have balconies and are not awfully luxury, but there is an outside patio, which is perfect for a nice sundowner. Breakfast here is mediocre, but considering the price, this hotel is probably the best value in Montevideo.
