Location

Nestled in the picturesque village of Buckland Newton, Dominey’s Yard is ideally positioned between the historic Abbey town of Sherborne and the charming County town of Dorchester. This prime location offers the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area, with a UK footpath conveniently leading directly from the cottages, beckoning you to embark on a day of adventures.

Buckland Newton is situated at the head of the beautiful Piddle Valley, encompassed by magnificent countryside that has earned the distinction of being designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Just a 15-minute drive in either direction will take you to Sherborne in the North, or Dorchester in the South, granting you access to an array of attractions and amenities.

For those seeking coastal delights, the world-renowned Jurassic Coast, adorned with stunning beaches and embraced by the South West coast path, is a mere 20 miles away.

Within the village of Buckland Newton itself, you’ll discover the convenience of a well-stocked shop, a charming church, and a delightful pub, all within a leisurely 3-minute stroll from the cottages. For a whimsical shortcut, there’s a cheeky Alice in Wonderland-style doorway nestled in the leafy green hedgerow that can transport you to the pub garden in just a few steps, adding a touch of enchantment to your village experience.

During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to explore an excellent array of nearby attractions. Highlights include the Roman Town House and Amphitheatre in Dorchester, the historic Sherborne Abbey, Castle, and Gardens, and the iconic Gold Hill, famously featured in the Hovis bread advert. Additionally, a visit to the awe-inspiring Cerne Abbas Giant, Britain’s largest chalk hill figure, is a must on your itinerary.

Cottages

The cottages at Dominey’s Yard have undergone meticulous and tasteful renovations, resulting in four beautiful self-catering cottages that cater to your every need. Each cottage seamlessly blends original features with modern amenities. The interiors are lovingly decorated, exuding a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that invites you to unwind and make yourself at home.

Three of the cottages feature two bedrooms, whilst the last one, The Gardener’s Cottage, sets itself apart, accommodating up to six guests across three generously sized bedrooms. It boasts a spacious living area and a well-appointed kitchen located on the ground floor.

During our stay, we had the pleasure of enjoying the beautiful Poacher’s Cottage, which comfortably accommodates four guests. This delightful cottage boasts its own private patio and garden, complete with garden furniture and a barbecue, providing the perfect setting for outdoor relaxation. The outdoor space leads directly into the main gardens, where charming pathways and stepping stones lead you to fruit and vegetable patches and more.

Inside the cottage, you will discover two beautifully decorated bedrooms, one double and one twin, each promising a restful night’s sleep. The bathroom has been recently renovated and features a shower enclosure, basin, and WC. The ground floor offers a cozy lounge area with a wood-burning stove, accompanied by an initial supply of logs. Stay connected with the complimentary Wi-Fi or indulge in entertainment options such as the DAB Radio/Bluetooth speaker and Smart TV. A selection of books and games awaits those seeking leisurely pursuits. The fully equipped kitchen boasts modern amenities, including a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, and a Nespresso coffee machine with pods. Additionally, there is a convenient cloakroom. Complimentary on-site parking is available, too, as well as baby and toddler equipment upon request. Further amenities include full central heating, all bed linens, and plush towels.

Food & Drink

As with most self-catering cottage stays, there is no restaurant on-site. However, there are many delectable alternatives just a stone’s throw away, not forgetting Adele’s delicious selection of cakes, bakes, and chutneys available to order, ensuring a tasty treat during your stay. Guests are also greeted on arrival with grocery staples, including a freshly baked loaf, a mini bucket of eggs, a pint of milk, butter, and a melt-in-the-mouth cake!

For those seeking dining experiences beyond the cottages, the highly convenient Gaggle of Geese Pub, which lies just beyond the Alice-in-Wonderland style gateway in the hedgerow in the main gardens, serves hearty meals, refreshing drinks and offers a wealth of entertainment for children all within a warm and inviting atmosphere.

If you consider yourself a true food enthusiast, then a visit to the award-winning Thimble Inn is an absolute must. Located a short drive away through the picturesque Piddle Valley in Piddlehinton, this renowned eatery serves a diverse menu that includes gourmet burgers, classic fish dishes, succulent steaks, and indulgent desserts.

For wine enthusiasts, the nearby Langham Wine Estate is a local gem worth exploring. This esteemed vineyard produces a selection of award-winning wines, offering the perfect opportunity for a tasting experience.

Nestled in the scenic Cerne Valley, you will also discover The Greyhound in Sydling St Nicholas. This charming establishment boasts a beautiful location in a quaint village and offers a delectable menu prepared with care. Expect delicious cuisine accompanied by friendly staff.

Conclusion

At Dominey’s Yard, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of nature, rich history, endless walks, and opportunities for delicious dining experiences, not forgetting the wonderful gardens, games area, and heated pool right on your doorstep, all of which will ensure a truly memorable and fulfilling stay.
