Book A Hotel

In this review, I pick the best luxury wilderness resorts and Eco retreats set in rainforests hidden away in Asia.

If you want to get away from it all and escape to a luxury retreat, far away from civilization but still enjoying a decent level of luxury, these are some of the best resorts worth traveling.

1. Keemala Phuket, Thailand

Keemala is nestled amidst lush flora on the rainforest-encrusted hills of Phuket. Overlooking Kamala village and out to the Andaman Sea, this member of Small Luxury Hotels of The World is hidden away from the crowds and offers a serene retreat.

38 Pool Villas offer pretty thatched roofs, huge four-poster beds, outdoor bathtubs, and private lap pools. All rooms overlook the rainforest, mountains, and the Andaman Sea. Over and above your own private lap pool, you will find the resort’s main freeform pool and Jacuzzi flanked with sun loungers. There is also an hourly shuttle to Kamala beach.

The Spa here is beautiful, with eight treatment pods, and dining here could not be more romantic, in intimate dining pods dotted around the swimming pool and next to a cascading waterfall.

Keemala is just a 3-minute drive from Kamala Beach and not far from the liveliness of Patong Beach, but it feels a world away. This luxury resort is often compared to Avatar’s Pandora and the Shire from Lord of the Rings. It is a paradise that must be experienced.

Keemala Phuket also features in our best romantic hotels and resorts for couples in Thailand.

2. Song Saa Private Island Resort, Cambodia

Located amongst the scattered Cambodian Islands in the little-visited Koh Rong archipelago, Song Saa Private Island Resort is nestled between unspoiled rainforests, tropical reefs, and golden sand beaches. This environmentally friendly resort is dedicated to improving the well-being and health of the ecosystem, local villages, and the economy. Even the water is vigilantly treated and recycled.

The overwater and jungle villas are built using recycled timber from disused fishing boats and fitted with furniture made from driftwood. Each villa has a private pool and sun deck. Easily one of Southeast Asia’s most exclusive and intimate private island resorts, this is the ideal place for you to lose yourself.

Song Saa Private Island Resort is also featured in our top 6 private Islands in Southeast Asia.

3. Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, Thailand

Immerse yourself in the lush tropics and get acquainted with local Thai culture on the terraced rice fields of the mystical Mae Rim Valley. Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai is the perfect place to discover the treasures of Northern Thailand.

Set in a tranquil, rural location, surrounded by verdant rice paddy fields, 98 pavilions, pool villas and larger residences are perched above rice paddies and sprawling grounds. They offer plush interiors and the crystal waters of a foliage-fringed pool.

The Four Seasons is a personal favorite amongst luxury hotel brands. I visited the Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat, a Four Seasons Hotel this summer and liked it so much that I will return next summer. The Four Seasons Hampshire is a favorite country house hotel in England and the Four Seasons London Park Lane makes the perfect city break as does the gorgeous Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg. In Hawaii its hard not to love the Four Seasons Maui.

4. Sandat Glamping Tents, Bali, Indonesia

Sandat Glamping Tents offer a low-key eco-resort built by local craftsmen set between jungle and rice fields in a beautifully maintained lush garden.

If you choose to book uber-luxurious tents, you will feel (and hear!) nature all around you. The jungle comes alive at night so if you are a light sleeper, bring your earplugs! The tent itself can only be described as amazing. The beds and bathrooms are deeply stylish, and although there are no TVs, Wi-Fi coverage is excellent. The tents and lumbungs all offer an individual pool and veranda with complete privacy for your very own slice of jungle luxury.

Ubud is just 10 minutes away by complimentary shuttle, where you can visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, have a massage or eat at one of the many excellent restaurants. Sandat Glamping Tents also sits about an hour from the capital, Denpasar.

Sandat Glamping Tents are a unique and glamorous way to camp. A way to enjoy nature without missing out on any of the luxuries of a five-star resort. A unique and enchanting way to see another side of the magical island of Bali.

Sandat Glamping also features in our best luxury tented camp hotels for glamping in Bali, Asia.

5. Plataran Menjangan Eco Resort & Spa, Bali, Indonesia

Plataran Menjangan Resort & Spa is nestled in the heart of the West Bali National Park in Indonesia, overlooking the ocean. The wilderness surrounds you with deer roaming freely, jungle, mountain, mangroves; the views are never-ending and the beauty of this place: unparalleled. Fly into Denpasar in Bali, the resort is about a 3-hour drive from the airport.

Plataran Menjangan Eco Resort & Spa has strong eco morals and prides itself in conserving the environment. Luxury villas are each built like a traditional Joglo house, and each benefits from a private plunge pool and garden, along with a private bathroom and LCD TV. The pools have ocean views, and the lush gardens are a few steps from the soothing waters below.

The fabulous infinity pool offers amazing ocean views. You can also cruise, kayak, trek, and cycle around the jungle from this remote and very special resort.
