Location

We prefer the location of the Grand Hyatt Atlanta In Buckhead Hotel in Buckhead Hotel vs. the Hyatt Regency Atlanta. Buckhead is the location of most of the best hotels in Atlanta, including Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead, The Whitley, A Luxury Collection Hotel Atlanta Buckhead, Mandarin Oriental Atlanta, and the InterContinental Buckhead.

The Grand Hyatt Atlanta In Buckhead Hotel is an exceptional Hyatt hotel in the heart of Buckhead, close to trendy restaurants, shops, and nightlife. It is only a short distance from Miami Circle Design District, plus the Intercontinental and Mandarin Oriental Atlanta are all within a 5-minute walk. Within just a 15-minute stroll, you’ll find popular attractions like Legoland Discovery Center, along with restaurants and nightclubs.

The Hyatt Regency offers more of a downtown experience and is closer to Marta, which is useful to get to and from the airport. When the working day has come to an end, Atlanta’s Downtown tends to clear out and become a bit dead, making this location very quiet for the evening.

This makes the Hyatt Regency the worst choice of the two hotels. It is, however, a handy location for Olympic Park, the aquarium, and Coke World. Buckhead, where the Grand Hyatt is located, is much better for restaurants and shopping.

Facilities

The Grand Hyatt Atlanta In Buckhead Hotel offers an indoor swimming pool with sun loungers, a gym and fitness room, and a golf course. The property was designed in an urban style and built-in 1990.

The Hyatt Regency is a John Portman with a Polaris lounge in the “UFO” at the top of the building. It has a unique and very special design with more exciting venues (the Polaris lounge) and otherwise comparable fitness facilities.

When comparing the Grand Hyatt Atlanta vs. Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Regency wins.

Rooms

Grand Hyatt Atlanta In Buckhead Hotel has contemporary rooms furnished with a minibar, a heating system, and storage. Some feature an outstanding garden view to enjoy. Each room comes with a small fridge and tea and coffee-making facilities.

All rooms at the Hyatt Regency feature separate living and work areas, with views including the Atlanta skyline or the inviting pool. The Deluxe Suite offers two balconies with city views, a dining table and bar, a living room, and other amenities.

When comparing the Grand Hyatt Atlanta vs. Hyatt Regency, there isn’t a clear winner on rooms.

Pool

The Hyatt Regency has a seasonal outdoor pool with an urban feel and plenty of outdoor loungers. The Grand Hyatt Atlanta also has an outdoor pool that is surrounded by netting and feels more old-fashioned. My pool preference goes to the Regency, but there is very little to choose between them.

Food

At Grand Hyatt Atlanta, there is a Japanese restaurant, Onyx, and the Grand restaurant, along with the bistro bar and a coffee shop.

The Hyatt Regency has to win for food venues because it has the iconic Polaris, which offers handcrafted cocktails and chef-inspired shared plates with amazing panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline. Guests shoot 22 stories up in the hotel’s glass elevators and are transported to a breathtaking space that is both completely modern and a tribute to Polaris’ retro history.

There is also Twenty-Two Storys, Atlanta’s Gastropub, and Sway Restaurant at the Regency Atlanta, plus there is a very good Gladys & Ron’s Chicken & Waffle a few blocks away.

Club Lounge

There is a great little club lounge at Grand Hyatt Atlanta in a smart but small room with nice views out to the skyscrapers and over the trees. There are multiple food offerings throughout the day, which are designed to be snacks.

The food at both the Grand Hyatt and Regency club lounges are very similar, of excellent quality but not massive quantity. The breakfast is good with lots of cereal, and fruit, including strawberries, juices, cold cuts, smoked salmon, yogurts, etc.

The evening food includes the usual chopped veggies, cold cuts, mini canapes, and two hot dishes, as well as large bowls of cold options. Just about enough to fill you up, but only just. You pay for beer & wine at both hotels along with other alcoholic drinks, so if this is a dealbreaker, you should not consider either hotel and should instead choose the InterContinental with a club lounge that serves free alcoholic drinks.

There isn’t a clear winner on club lounge when comparing the Grand Hyatt Atlanta vs. Hyatt Regency.

When comparing both Hyatts with other club lounges in Atlanta, the Hyatts win because of their excellent food quality, although they do not offer the very best. For this, you need to try the Ritz-Carlton, which comes top in our review of the best executive club lounge in Atlanta.

Conclusion

Location is the main and most fundamental differentiator between the Grand Hyatt Atlanta In Buckhead Hotel vs. the Hyatt Regency Downtown Atlanta. Beyond this, the price should be the main reason you choose one over the other. They are both good choices so if one is cheaper than the other and you aren’t bothered about the location, go for the cheapest.
