Book A Stay

Staying in a former prison centre has got to be an intriguing proposition for any luxury traveller, and you can do just that in this funky boutique hotel in the Dutch town of Roermond.

Location

Roermond is a city in the southeastern part of the Netherlands. This atmospheric town is rich in cultural heritage and enjoys a unique location in the “Maasplassen“ lake district, on the banks of the Meuse, the Roer and Swalm. The town is an excellent destination for shoppers, and you can combine your visit with a visit to both Germany and Belgium which are both just 15km from Roermond.

Roermond brims with cultural and historical artefacts and the town centre has been designated as a conservation area. The city boasts a wealth of listed buildings such as churches and guild houses and with a skyline dominated by the St. Christopher Cathedral, dating back to the 15th Century and the Munster Church, built in the 13th Century. Also well worth a look are the “Stadhuis“, the city hall from 1700, and the “Minderbroederskerk“ (The Franciscan Friars’ Church). At the heart of this town steeped in history, there are a wide range of shops and charming squares. These and the many cosy terraces and picturesque restaurants in the city centre.

Style & Character

The Het Arresthuis hotel is located in the heart of Roermond and has a fun and clever design which integrates the prison theme throughout. The main hall with all rooms coming off it feels like a fancy version of Alcatraz.

Rooms

All the cell doors are original and come complete with bars. The rooms (usually a combination or 2 or 3 cells) are warm, stylish and luxurious (and not at all creepy!). Facilities include a minibar, a seating area, free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. The hotel also offers a sauna and a gym.

Food & Drink

Breakfast is excellent and bears no resemblance to the former bread and water prison regime. Guests can enjoy the international gourmet cuisine at the restaurant of Het Arresthuis, and the modern bar serves a variety of drinks and snacks.

Around the hotel, the Munster Church is less than a 5-minute walk away, Theatre hotel De Oranjerie is 300 yards away, and the Designer Outlet Roermond is 1,000 yards away.
