If you like your rustic with a heavy dose of luxury and want a more personalized safari experience, then Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve in South Africa might well be for you.

Location

The Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve is located near the town of Graaff-Reinet in the Great Karoo region in South Africa. The Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve consists of 14,000 hectares of stunning private land cupped in the palm of the majestic Sneeuberg Mountain Range. Daily flights from Plettenberg Bay to Graaff-Reinet make it simple to access the reserve, which only lies an hour away.

Style & Character

Mount Camdeboo is an award-winning private game reserve that offers a uniquely personal experience for the luxury safari traveler. The owners have a genuine passion of conservation, and the reserve is home to numerous endangered species that have been successfully rehabilitated in the Great Karoo region. There are three gorgeous historic manor houses lying in the valley which form your home for your stay. They are built in the Cape Dutch style and are open-plan and airy. The décor is charmingly rustic chic with four poster beds, raw silks, and fine linen; the manor houses convey a feeling of grandeur and history.

Service & Facilities

Your stay includes two game drives per day, which usually take place before dawn and at sunset, the very best times to view the wildlife. You head up the mountain slopes out of the valley and onto the plateau above, where the animals graze, and the views are quite simply magnificent. The vehicles used are purpose-built, 9-seater game-viewing Land Rovers. You will most likely get a chance to see the “Camdeboo Big Five”: the breeding cheetah pair, the rare white rhinos, the giraffe, and the almost extinct mountain zebra. You can always opt for a guided bush walk as an alternative to a normal game drive, and other popular activities here include star gazing (the Great Karoo has some of the clearest skies in the southern hemisphere, making for a totally dazzling display), a scenic helicopter flight and cheetah tracking (as part of a normal game drive). Each manor house boasts its own full-length swimming pool, beautifully landscaped gardens, and plenty of places to relax after an awesome game drive.

The service is as luxurious as your surroundings; your every need is anticipated, and the courteous staff are efficient and responsive.

Rooms

Across the three manor houses, there are 12 beautiful, spacious ensuite suites that are equipped with all the luxuries that you would expect. Camdeboo Manor is slightly more glam, Courtyard Manor has a relaxed vibe, and Hillside Manor is more contemporary. If you feel like getting back to nature, then there’s always the option of 2 privately located canvas safari tents raised on wooden decks that overlook the stream. They are akin to glamping and include a real queen-sized bed and are ensuite, so this is still roughing it luxury-style!

Food & Drink

Food is very important here, there’s a real history of flavourful, rich cooking in the area, and the talented chefs at Mount Camdeboo produce delectable dishes inspired by these roots, albeit with a light, contemporary touch. Where you dine is almost as exciting as what; some nights, it’s in the dining room with a roaring fire. Others, you are in a secluded courtyard or even under the night sky with full-course silverware and a dedicated chef cooking right in front of you. Don’t miss the extra-special bush breakfast up on the plateau too, watch the sunrise and the wildlife wake up for the day; an unforgettable experience.
