If you go skiing in Austrian Tyrol, or are heading to a wellness resort in the Austrian hills, you will fly into the small local airport of Innsbruck. It is one of those airports that you can climb down from the plane and stroll across the tarmac to the airport.

Innsbruck offers some of the most amazing views in all of Europe. The jagged peaks of the Nordkette range are so close, that you can quickly travel from the city’s heart to over 2000m above sea level. Many travellers simply pass through Innsbruck on the way to the hillsides, but they are missing out. Innsbruck offers shopping, history, easy access to the slopes and some exceptionally good value luxury hotels. In Innsbruck itself, its late-medieval Altstadt is straight out of a story book, with the grand Habsburg palace and baroque cathedral towering above this pretty town centre and surrounding streets.

Having hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976, Innsbruck knows quite a bit about winter sports. A massive Olympic ski jump sits to the edge of the city, on the mountainside, and offers spectacular views. Skiers and snowboarders also have access to over 500 km (310 miles) of trails in 25 surrounding village resorts all on one reasonably priced ski pass, and connected by a free ski bus. It is worth knowing that you can ski from Innsbruck right through from October to May, on the Stubai glacier which is around a 45 minute drive from Innsbruck town centre.

Our favourite luxury hotel in Innsbruck is aDLERS Hotel Innsbruck, a stylish hotel with a modern and luxury look. It is located in the tallest building in Innsbruck and has 75 “panorama” rooms which offer incredible views across the town and to the mountains behind. We particularly love the rooftop Panorama Terrace (pictured above) which has a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights so is a fun place to be.

Closer to the Stubai Glacier in Austria is the luxury Jagdhof hotel, which has a complimentary shuttle which takes you on the 20 minute drive to and from the Glacier. This family run Relais & Chateaux property is sat on the edge of a beautiful Austrian village and offers amazing food, a bar with a wonderful atmosphere and live music every night, a very good spa and a superb indoor-outdoor pool which opens up to extensive lawns where you can sunbathe after a day on the glacier.

My favorite luxury hotel near Innsbruck is in Sölden, which is slightly farther away, hence the position as number 3. The 5 star Das Central hotel sits up a side street from the main street. Here, refurbished rooms facing the front of the hotel offer sunshine through the floor to ceiling windows throughout the day. The decor is modern pine with swish bathrooms and superbly comfortable beds and incredible food. At 1368m of altitude, this snow sure resort offers early and late season snow in Austria’s largest glacier areas.

You can fly into Innsbruck from Heathrow with direct flights on British Airways or arrive from Gatwick on Easyjet. Our pick of the top 3 best hotels near Innsbruck and all offer a brilliant place to stay in the beautiful region of the Tyrol.
