The airline HK Express has just launched its Reward U frequent flyer loyalty scheme and in this review, I endeavor to make sense of it. In fact, this new scheme is one of the most simple on the market. HK Express allows members to earn ten points for every $1 HKD spent on all fares and selected services. This means points can be collected through seat bookings but also from payable add-ons such as pre-booked meals, advanced seat selection, pre-ordered checked baggage, and pre-booked priority check-in.

Reward-U is a simple pay-and-earn system and the earn rate is not determined by complicated fare classes. Regardless of your ticket price, you will still earn ten points for every dollar spent.

Points are valid for three years from the date flown and can be used to redeem for any fare, any time. HK Express will not impose any blackout dates or off-limit routes for fare redemption. As long as there’s a free seat on a flight, that seat will be available for redemption.

Members who do not have the required amount of points to redeem fares can choose to mix points with cash to purchase the tickets instead, as long as they have a minimum of 40,000 points (earned after accumulated spending of $4,000 HKD or more).

Once a seat redemption has been made, the points used for the redemption are non-refundable in the event that the member wishes to cancel the flight. This is a shame. I am a big Avios collector and the ability to cancel and get my points back is a huge advantage (even if they keep the taxes I have paid in admin fees).
