Bahia Bustamante is a small, family-run project, a private wildlife sanctuary and an Eco Lodge set in remote Patagonia by the sea. Spread over 100,000 acres and located about 1,000 miles south of Buenos Aires, this isolated outpost is a true escape-from-it-all destination. This auction is an exclusive invitation to experience the authentic Patagonia, surrounded by an amazing diversity of marine and land wildlife (penguins, sea lions, seabirds, guanacos, rheas and more) – the coast is a National Park and the Lodge is also part of “Blue Patagonia” UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Only a few places in the world house such an amount and diversity of seabirds and marine mammals.
Bahia Bustamante is truly set in the middle of nature, hundreds of miles from any other urbanisation with unending skies and undulating landscapes ranging from pockets of the steppe, uninterrupted swathes of pastureland, dunes and canyons to the rugged Atlantic cliffs which drop down beaches and the wild and deep blue ocean.
Founded in the 1950s as a seaweed settlement, more than 400 seaweed workers and their families lived there and the property featured a church, school, police department and everything a small “town” and their inhabitants needed.
Today, with only 6 Cabins by the sea, this property opens its doors to travellers offering the exclusivity of being surrounded by 360 degrees of nature and with direct access to an incredible diversity of wildlife, aiming to promote environmental conservation and raise awareness on the protection of this fragile ecosystem.
The property itself comprises of the old grocery store, which now houses the common areas of the Lodge and has an old-world Patagonia atmosphere. The club is a games room with pool, ping-pong and table-football. The bar and living room is the perfect place to relax while watching the sea through the immense windows and enjoying the special lighting & fabulous sunsets that the Patagonia offers. The bar is situated in the corner of the living room. In the small library, you will find works about birds that inhabit the local shores left year after year by the Biologists.
The restaurant serves regional food based on typical products of the area: seaweed, different kinds of meat, fish and other marine products and fruits and vegetables from the organic garden all make their way onto your table. Meals are hearty, country fare with lentil based dishes, roasted vegetables along with fresh fire-roasted lamb all washed down with Patagonia beer.
There are numerous activities at your fingertips including: sailing and visiting sea lion, penguins and other sea bird colonies and exploring the peninsula with its sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and natural swimming pools by trekking, mountain biking or by 4×4. There is also a petrified forest located 18 miles away and Penguin Island to discover as well as amazing trekking at Rock Canyon, discovering the seaweed industry, and taking in a visit to a typical Patagonian ranch. Or you can simply just relax and enjoy the most exclusive sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, surrounded by huge red rocks, in an atmosphere of incredibly different textures and colours. With its huge number of geographic accidents, sounds and quietness, Bahía Bustamante is a paradise for you to discover. Please note all exploration activities are not included and must be paid for by the winner separately – the daily program at the Lodge suggests at least 2 daily activities per day, to explore the magnificent nature and wildlife which surrounds you. Guests can decide upon check in what they prefer to do and pay for the activities at that time: costs are from $40 to $70 USD (approx. £30 to £55 GBP), per activity, per person.
The winner will be staying in one of the main accommodation options at Bahia Bustamante: a Standard Sea Cabin. Each Cabin has 2 very comfortable, simply decorated bedrooms, living room, and fully equipped bathroom. Mini bar and ocean front view terrace. Wifi is available in the common areas most of the day provided by solar energy, this is a variable service. Unsurprisingly there is no cell phone signal, all communications are via WhatsApp. Bicycles are complimentary.
