Enjoy a 3-night stay for 2 guests in a Chale Beach Banda Room at The Sands at Chale Island, the only individual resort Island in Kenya. The winner and their guest will be staying on a half board buffet style basis and the stay is valued at approximately $750 USD / £570 GBP*.

Prize stay dates: to be booked in advance and taken between 01 May – 30 June 2018, subject to availability.

The Sands at Chale Island is the only individual resort Island in Kenya. Lying just four degrees south of the equator, Chale Island offers guests a choice of worlds that no other island can equal: coral seas abundant with fish life; coastal forests and mangroves teaming with birds and primates; white sandy, palm fringed beaches that offer safe, warm bathing; a tidal saltwater lake; and of course, Kenya’s world-famous safari parks.

The small and romantic Chale Island lies 600 metres off the mainland and is 1.2 km long and 0.8 km wide. It has been divided into two parts; resort and sacred ancient mangrove forest or “kaya”. The resort lies in 15 acres of indigenous ancient forest, with a stunning 10,000 square metre white sand bay which is protected by a vibrant coral reef. With an explosion of colourful flora and fauna the island is truly beautiful and if that’s not enough, it also features a mystical inland tidal mangrove lake.

Kenya’s beaches rank in the top ten worldwide and Chale Island’s coral sand bay counts as one of the best that Kenya has to offer. The secluded bay is covered with snow-white powder fine coral sand and due to the remoteness of the island, it is the only beach in Kenya that can truly be called private. Due to the lack of seaweed pile-ups, turtles frequently lay eggs in the bay adding to the charm of this magical Island.

The hotel has been specifically built with nature and the environment in mind and is one of the most low impact hotels in Kenya. The hotel features three swimming pools: beside the reception lies the main fresh water swimming pool connected by a small waterfall to a sixteen seater Jacuzzi surrounded by sun beds; between the Standard Rooms lies another swimming pool area with pool bar, more sun beds and magnificent panoramic views of the Indian Ocean; and finally, on the other side of the Island by the SPA and fitness area lies a salt-water swimming pool with steps leading directly into the sea at high tide offering a magical swim through the mangroves to the main jetty.

On arrival guests are warmly greeted in the spacious open-air circular reception area with lofty roof with a welcome drink and a relaxed check-in, which will set the pace for the rest of your holiday. In terms of dining, the resort also features a blend of traditional Kenyan cuisine with a healthy twist of Italian panache and a hint of the Orient in the main restaurant which has steps leading straight down to the beach. Nestled between the reception and the restaurant lies the Main Bar which offers an extensive international beverage menu with a local taste of the exotic, plus a well-stocked wine cellar to fulfil every palate. The Galana pool bar is located by the Standard Rooms and offers guests stunning ocean vistas and finally, tea is an essential part of the Chale Island day, and the resort offers a wide selection to enjoy whilst surrounded by nature.

The winner will be staying in a Banda Room (‘Bandas’ in Swahili means ‘small house’) with high, palm thatch roofs and views either out to sea, over the sandy beach, or across the lagoon and mangroves, perfect to capture the setting sun over the Shimba Hills. The room also features a private front lawn and large veranda with sun beds and Swahili day bed. All rooms are fully air-conditioned.
