Book A Hotel

The iconic Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge has been on my must-stay list for some time now. A historic building, an epic location with views to die for, the basement spa to rival all London hotel spas, and a reputation that the famous Four Seasons service levels are more than upheld here. I had to pay them a visit. And I wasn’t let down in the slightest with any of my high expectations and left slightly bowled over by this impressive hotel.

Location

Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge is brilliantly located if you’re doing business in the City of London and is fabulously located for leisure travelers right by Tower Bridge, the Tower of London (where the Crown Jewels are housed), the River Thames, and all the gruesome history of characters like Jack the Ripper and the Great Fire of London, which started in Pudding Lane 5 minutes walk from the hotel’s entrance.

Tower Hill, where many of London’s original residents had their heads chopped off, and Tower Hill underground station are steps away. The Tower of London lies just across the pretty Trinity Square, so you can walk there in under a minute! The Shard, HMS Belfast, Borough Market, Leadenhall Market, and St Paul’s Cathedral are all within easy walking distance.

There is plenty of space for vehicles to pull up outside the hotel in the quiet street outside. Best of all is the impressive view of the Tower of London and Tower Bridge that the location of the Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge offers.

If you veer off the main streets around the hotel, you can still discover cobbled alleyways and ancient buildings steeped in history, and of course, the Tower of London is a must-visit experience if you stay here.

Style & Character

The sheer grandeur and history of the building that houses the Four Seasons London at Tower Bridge is not to be underestimated. Originally the Port Authority of London, the building, built in 1922, is a history lovers dream. The maritime influence is subtle but evident throughout the hotel, from the pillars resembling rope that encircle the main Rotunda restaurant to the subtle use of maritime motifs in the décor.

The building suffered considerably during the Blitz in World War 2, and much of it was rebuilt. Four Seasons also renovated the entire building when it took over the historic building in 2017. When digging for the underground swimming pool, they uncovered some fascinating archaeological finds. Most are now in the Museum of London Archaeology, but some are housed in glass cases just off the main Rotunda area.

Service & Facilities

The underground spa was quite simply one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. Insanely glamorous and serene, the pools (yes, two) are long and thin, and the entire space is decked with light grey mosaic walls with abstract real gold trees, creating a calm, natural mood. One of the pools is a regular swimming pool, albeit it’s 14 meters in length, and the other is a vitality pool. Here, you float slowly between various areas, choosing from underwater massage pods, a neck massager, or underwater jacuzzi beds.

At one end of the room, there is a sauna, and at the other, there is a steam room, with chill-out spaces next to each. The usual very comfortable Four Seasons spa loungers line the pool, and just outside, you can help yourself to chilled cucumber and lemon water with warm Jasmine tea served alongside.

To say this spa is relaxing is an understatement, and we just didn’t want to leave. Other facilities include a state-of-the-art 24-hour fitness center and seven treatment rooms, including a Hamman suite where you can indulge in a wide range of luxurious body treatments and facials.

This is a Four Seasons hotel and for those that know the brand, this does mean it comes with a certain expectation service-wise. I’m relieved to say that the Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge exceeded these expectations. Everyone we met welcomed us warmly, were friendly, attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

Four Seasons is a very family-friendly brand, and we did wonder if this would be lacking somewhat with such a grand, adult hotel, but I’m pleased to say their core brand values still very much stand firm. Our children were welcomed beautifully, child-sized robes and slippers were placed in our room, and at breakfast, when eyes proved too big for little tummies, they were gently asked if they’d like a takeaway box so they could tuck in again a little later; really kind and appreciated by the children and by us.

Rooms

The accommodations here define luxury. The guest rooms are beautiful, spacious, and surprisingly quiet, too! You could be at their sister hotel Four Seasons Hampshire, in the depths of the country with the soundproofing in the rooms!

All the guest bedrooms have King-sized beds, which gave me one of the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a while. As with all Four Seasons hotels, you can select your pillow preference in their incredibly useful app. While we’re on tech, the usual bedside iPad was provided here, too, as with all Four Seasons hotels. It’s these little touches that I love so much when staying in a Four Seasons hotel. They do consistency incredibly well.

All the other amenities you would expect are present: bathrobes, easy-to-adjust air conditioning, flat-screen TV, safe, and Wi-Fi that’s fast and simple to connect to.

Our room was accessed by either the original and rather dramatic stone staircase (laid now with carpeting up the center, so they are safer than they probably used to be!), or if the legs are London-weary, by the rather impressive all-glass lift at its center. The lift operates purely on hydraulics, so it is pure glass at the top and the smoothest glide you can imagine!

We spread out very comfortably indeed in an Executive Room. More akin to a Junior Suite, the room consists of a spacious bedroom that flows into a living area with a desk, sofa bed, and armchairs. The entryway, before you reach the main living spaces, leads you to a dressing area and drinks station, which is home to your minibar and tea and coffee facilities.

The Four Seasons all-marble bathrooms are somewhat legendary with those who know the brand. Our bathroom more than did this justice; his and hers sinks were opposite one another, with one flanking the toilet cubicle and the other a stand-alone shower cubicle. The oversized bathtub stands grandly in the center of the bathroom.

Some of the bathrooms echo the gold tiling in the spa and are quite something! Others offer a mix of gold and white tiles and a less exotic setting.

The recently-launched Skyline Penthouse was the absolute most epic of all hotel rooms, quite possibly that I’ve ever seen (and I have seen a few!).

Of course, there are many bedrooms, marble bathrooms, an office, a vast fully fitted kitchen but there’s also a private gym, a cinema, a beautiful library and best of all, climb a spiral staircase, and you find a secret garden housed in one the turrets! Simply magical.

Food & Drink

We fell in love with the Rotunda Bar and Lounge that forms the very heart and soul of the building. The other restaurants, the spa, the lifts to the rooms, the reception desk, all the other areas of the hotel stem from this central point.

It’s where you head for breakfast (oh my goodness, breakfast, more on this later!), it’s where you return for afternoon tea, it’s home to many a coffee over a business meeting and come evening, it’s the place to go for a cocktail or a whisky and something to eat. On Thursday and Friday evenings, you can even enjoy live music while you nibble on that light bite. As the name suggests, the space is circular and is topped with a stunning domed ceiling. It’s spacious but seems intimate and friendly as well.

Breakfast is served buffet-style, plus you can also order from an a la carte menu. The serving area is at the center of the Rotunda and is the most tempting circle of deliciousness! We feasted on the usual hot fare, cheese, cold meats, fruits, cereals, and pastries, but also the likes of breakfast quiche, seeds, and nuts, fresh tomato with mozzarella, marble cake, cheese twists, a wonderful pot of quinoa and shredded lettuce.

The list goes on. It was hard to imagine a more generous and varied spread. We liked how you could overdose on naughty treats or stick to a really healthy start to the day. Or better still, just a lovely selection of your favorites of both.

The Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge is home to Mei Ume, a beautiful Chinese and Japanese restaurant. Mei Ume serves both Asian cuisines so you can choose from authentic Chinese main courses, sushi, and sashimi. Their sharing plates are excellent, washed down, of course, with an Asian-inspired cocktail. Don’t miss their signature dish of Whole Peking Duck. They have a set lunch menu, too so you don’t even have to wait until dinner!
