This remote island is a 45-minute flight from Bali, and traditional villages mainly inhabit this peaceful island along with this luxury resort. You should book transfers before you arrive as no taxis await the plane’s arrival.

The rooms at Nihi Sumba are individual villas with private pools. They are dotted up a jungle-covered mountain, with lower ones opening right onto the sandy shoreline. Most villas have outdoor bathrooms, a wonderful decked area with lime green loungers, and a private plunge pool. Larger villas also have their own sofa seating area outside. The treehouse is a particularly unique villa, built in trees with three bedrooms and two swimming pools, which overlooks the ocean.

The decor within the villas is gorgeous, with wooden floors, wooden window frames on the windows that offer wrap-around views of the jungle and sea, and wooden-framed beds draped in mosquito nets for extra protection, giving the beds a four-poster look.

Two nice surprises here are the excellent Wi-Fi, which might be unexpected in such a remote resort, and complimentary minibar with snacks, soft drinks, beer, vodka, gin, and whiskey.

Not all villas offer private pools. The smaller villas offer decked areas with seating and daybeds, and those by the shoreline offer the opportunity to step straight out into the water. They are Indonesia’s closest thing to an overwater villa from the Maldives.

Nihi Sumba offers three dining venues, all included in the all-inclusive room rate. The main restaurant, Ombak, is a cozy, open-air beachfront venue that serves à la carte breakfast and dinner featuring a mix of Indonesian and international cuisine. Nihi also hosts themed dinners, including a Jungle Party night with traditional Sumbanese fire dancers performing under the stars.

Activities here include surfing, horse riding, yoga, and a wonderful hour-long hike along the beachside for exercise. But most guests simply relax on this idyllic 2.5 km beach. The golden sand, blue sea, and viridescent rice fields, and forest make the setting picture perfect.
