The Swan Arundel is an ancient grade two listed pretty pub on the banks of the River Arun and perfectly positioned in the heart of Arundel. It makes for a delightful and charismatic weekend break in one of the prettiest and most interesting market towns in the beautiful South Downs.
Location
From the quaint and sympathetically refurbished boutique rooms to the rustic pub downstairs, you will feel like you have stepped back in time when you arrive at the Swan Arundel. Public parking can be found just behind the pub. The pub itself is located on the main street, so you’re positioned a short stroll from everything, including the castle.
Rooms
These are cozy and charismatic. Wooden floors with oatmeal hessian rugs complement the crisp white sheets and the clapboard, nautical cream-blue themed decor. Old-fashioned sash windows clad with shutters in some rooms and curtains in others look out upon the thriving little town. There are some thoughtful touches, like the fresh homemade shortbreads from the kitchen, as well as a couple of bottles of water.
Their executive rooms are larger and recommended as they have a bit more room and a king bed (2 singles pushed together), which was both super comfortable and huge. Perhaps it was a little too comfortable when combined with the excellent beer and country air… my last thought before falling asleep was, “I must turn the TV off” next thing I knew, it was morning, and yes, the TV was still on! Bathrooms are well equipped and stylish if a little cramped. We had a large free-standing deep roll-top bath as well as a shower (number 10 “Butser”)!
Food & Drink
We spent the evening in the bar & it couldn’t have been more enjoyable. The pints were superb, and the ambiance, with candles and lanterns, and pretty traditional decor with lots of dried flowers above the bar, was delightful. The food was lovely too. Don’t miss the grouse special (see the photo of the menu board), which was exactly that, rather special, and their apple crumble was truly scrumptious.
Conclusion
The Swan Arundel definitely deserves a spot in our list of best luxury country pubs with rooms. The staff were warm and friendly, and they really seemed to care. We will return!
