Book A Hotel

We review the best luxury hotels in Chengdu in China’s Sichuan province. If your budget allows, you should consider staying at one of the city’s best luxury hotels. These include The Temple House, The Ritz-Carlton Chengdu, Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu, and St. Regis Chengdu.

Sichuan capital Chengdu has been called the San Francisco of China. From the buzzing entertainment district to the cultural highlights, there is plenty to do. Don’t miss the Pandas during your stay in Chengdu. Most luxury hotels can arrange a private trip to the Chengdu Panda Base, one of China’s premier research facilities for breeding giant pandas.

1. The Temple House

Temple House Hotel Chengdu is a luxury boutique-style hotel in Chengdu near the Taikoo Li shopping district and within walking distance of designer stores and Chengdu’s best noodle shops and teahouses.

A bamboo-lined archway leads into the Qing Dynasty courtyard building that serves as the entrance to The Temple House. This beautifully renovated courtyard building is part of a conservation effort surrounding the 1,000 year-old Daci Temple. The old building looks particularly stunning at night, lit up and dotted with vegetation. You are stepping back in time whilst remaining in a chic and luxury environment.

In fact, all the communal rooms come alive at night, helped by the decor, which fuses traditional architectural elements with a decidedly urban mix of white stone, black timber, and other natural materials. Jing’s cocktail bar is a Jazz Age-inspired drinking den. Its luxe decor, live DJs, and inventive drinks infused with Sichuan influences set the vibe. Seating is in booths, on tall bar stools, and on the outdoor terrace.

The formal Tivano restaurant is the ideal place to enjoy Italian cuisine. It offers similar modern and vibrant designs with lots of woods, leathers, booths, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the central courtyard. Temple all-day bistro serves up fresh seasonal dishes on its cross-cultural menu of local favorites and Western classics. Dine-in or grab and go. Finally, the tranquil, traditional teahouse serves rejuvenating Chinese teas and a vegetarian menu of regional Sichuan cuisine in a Qing Dynasty courtyard home.

Rooms and apartments can be found in two contemporary blocks designed to evoke stepped rice terraces and local Shu embroidery. Their Asian, minimalist decor contrasts nicely with the richer and more detailed communal areas. Our favorite rooms are the courtyard suites, which open onto a private garden, as does the Mi Xun Spa, with its stunning pool lit by sculptured skylights.

2. The Ritz-Carlton Chengdu

The Ritz-Carlton Chengdu is a luxurious base from which to experience the city’s numerous attractions and the best in dining, shopping and entertainment. It also offers the best executive club lounge in Chengdu.

Balance your life force at CHI, The Spa, or take a dip in the tranquil pool and, afterward, dine on authentic Chinese and international food. With 593 rooms, this hotel is one of the largest in the city center, with modern furnishings and mind-boggling views. Consider a Horizon Club Level room to take advantage of the exclusive executive club lounge.

5. Grand Hyatt Chengdu

The Grand Hyatt Chengdu is a stunning hotel in Chengdu, and as you enter the lobby, you may be forgiven for thinking you have walked into a Park Hyatt rather than a Grand Hyatt. The foyer is simply stunning, with lots of muted lighting, stylish lamps, and cream sofas. If you like flower arrangements, which I do, they are utterly indulgent and enormous here. Facilities also include a decent gym with no views, a very stylish pool, an excellent spa, and restaurants and bars.

This is a great hotel to select if you are a Globalist World of Hyatt member as the upgrades tend to be fairly generous here, with lucky guests reporting on upgrades right up to a suite as well as a fruit plate welcome amenity. If you are a Globalist, you will get free club lounge access here; otherwise, you need to book a club room to gain access and exclusive privileges.

Rooms are really nice here with great views and decor that is more like a Park Hyatt than a Grand Hyatt and toiletries from June Jacobs in the bathrooms.

An exciting new landmark in the capital of Sichuan Province, the InterContinental Chengdu combines the best of all worlds. Renowned for its authentic Sichuan hospitality, the hotel features luxurious guest rooms and high-tech business facilities. Enjoy the stylish spa, where Eastern philosophies meet western techniques. This is not a great location for sightseeing, particularly the pandas, which are far away, but the nearby metro is fast and easy.

InterContinental club lounges are always excellent, usually offering great views, extensive breakfast with buffet and hot a la carte dishes like eggs benedict and florentine, omelets and pancakes all made to order, afternoon tea with plates of cakes and evening complimentary alcoholic and soft drinks and canapes and nibbles.

This club lounge is no exception and is excellent and offers great food and excellent views. It’s a huge lounge, and the service is always great here. They call you by name, come by to serve you drinks, make sure your plates are cleaned, etc. The view is from the 5th floor over a pleasant space looking at the Holiday Inn Century City West.

JW Marriott Chengdu is gorgeous and centrally located with easy access to everywhere. The JW Marriott Hotel Chengdu brings refined style, culturally inspired cuisine, and holistic wellbeing to southwest China’s largest city square, Tianfu Square.

There is a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor swimming pool (really smart and up on a high floor), and Spa. The room, lounge, and service are much better than most JWs in North America, with an excellent breakfast in the restaurant. As a general rule, Gold Marriott Bonvoy members get upgraded top floor rooms, and Platinum members often get upgraded to a suite.

The lounge here is large and well-appointed and one of the best club lounges in Chengdu. Breakfast has a made-to-order omelet or noodle station with loads of fruits and hot items, mainly geared to the Chinese guest rather than the western. The staff here are excellent. Happy hour offers plenty of food along with the noodle station, with spirits, wine and beer are decent.
