A volcano in Mexico caused the ridiculous flight route of a KLM aircraft this week, shown in the tweet below. The plane flew to South America, almost got to its destination, and then returned back to Amsterdam after a gruelling 11 hours

The reason for the return was the “unfavourable flying conditions above Mexico after activity of the volcano Popocatepetl”. KLM apologised for the inconvenience, which must have been fairly miserable for the passengers onboard.
