5. Sofitel London St James, London

The Sofitel London St James is a grand hotel set in a beautiful old building that used to be a bank. Remnants of the old bank still remain, from the ornate high ceilings in the foyer to the swathes of marble throughout the building. The hotel has even kept remnants of the old bank; coins, notes weighing scales, and other apparatus used in the bank all those years ago are displayed in glass cases next to the check-in desk.

The Sofitel London St James has a great location. Walk north, and you will reach the iconic Piccadilly Circus (your nearest tube stop), which leads onto Regent Street, where you will find an enormous Apple store and a bunch of designer and high street stores, including Top Shop, H&M, and Tommy Hilfiger. To the South, you are just steps away from St James’s Park and the Mall, which leads to Buckingham Palace and various squares where you can watch soldiers on horses in Busby hats. Trafalgar Square with Nelsons Column and the hub of Charing Cross station is also just 5 minutes away. Finally, let’s not forget that you are in Theatreland here. Her Majesty’s Theatre is located behind the Sofitel and the National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery around the corner.

This grand building has been beautifully refurbished and mixes the history of the traditional old building with new and stylish interiors, which make it feel like a really “happening” place to be. The bar’s popularity was evident on our visit as it was almost always packed with locals and guests.

There is great humor in the decor, such as the original painting glued to the ceiling in the bar, which encourages you to sit and look upwards and in the foyer, while I was there, there was a selection of artwork displayed by one of France’s most successful contemporary artists, Richard Orlinski. A selection of his famous figurine works was being displayed, which gave it a sense of vibrancy.

To one side of the lobby is the bright and airy The Balcon restaurant, where breakfast is served along with lunch and evening meals. It has a sophisticated yet contemporary brasserie feel with lots of funky lighting. Next door is an atmospheric bar, and beyond this, behind the reception desk, there is a pretty rose lounge with lots of flowers on the walls and pink lighting. This lounge is ideal for an afternoon tea which can be enjoyed with the sounds of a live harp.

Further down the corridor, there are numerous meeting rooms (although I cannot stress this enough, this hotel does not feel like a business hotel in any way). There is a generous spa area with a cathedral-like sitting area leading onto treatment rooms.

Rooms have a classic but stylish design and are a good size for central London. The smart decor is complemented by the black and white immaculate bathrooms with black marble work surfaces.

It is rare for a hotel in central London to be rated excellent so consistently on TripAdvisor. I have stayed in many Sofitel hotels around the world, including the Sofitel at London Heathrow, but the Sofitel London St James is head and shoulders above the rest in terms of luxury. This is a very special hotel in the heart of London. Book here, and you will be delighted with your choice!

6. Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao

On your next trip to Shanghai, China, stay in pure luxury at the stunning, Parisian-inspired Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao.

The Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao hotel lies in the heart of the city’s Hongqiao central business district. You are conveniently near to Hongqiao Airport and Railway Station and opposite the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC).

The Luxury Rooms are not only larger than the Superior Rooms and that bit more stylish too, but also include magnificent floor-to-ceiling windows to really make the most of the city views. An upgrade to a Prestige Suite gives you a separate living room, much more space and offers the ultimate extravagance for the luxury traveler.

There is a fabulous selection of restaurants and bars available to you at Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao. Dine-in elegance at the international restaurant Kwee Zeen whilst marveling at the stunning views of the cascading waterfall. Savor modern Cantonese fusion cuisine at Le Chinios, which also gives you a delightful view of the falls. Head to Wasabi for Japanese delicacies or for Spanish tapas, try Ocho Tapas and Wine. End your evening at Le Bar with a creative cocktail in the surroundings of an opulent Parisian lounge.

7. Sofitel Xining

For the very best in Chinese luxury, you’d struggle to find a better example than the exquisite Sofitel Xining in the city of Xining in China.

The hotel lies on the ancient Northern Silk Road in Xining. The largest city on the Tibetan Plateau, Xining, is the capital of Qinghai province in western China. The nearest airport, Caojiapu Airport, is just 25 miles from the hotel, and there is a shuttle bus.

Xining itself offers a unique and utterly fabulous cultural experience; with influence from all the province’s varied cultures – Muslim, Tibetan, and Han Chinese felt strongly. Browse the colorful street markets and traditional shops, enjoying the contrast with the gleaming modern skyline, all set against an inspiring mountain backdrop.

The opulent, neo-Gothic façade gives you the first hint of what awaits. The lobby is an experience all of its own; soaring ceilings, translucent chandeliers, and marble finishes. Inside, the traditional French chic of a Sofitel hotel blends exquisitely with the glamour of modern Chinese décor.

The facilities are as beautiful and luxurious as you could hope. The indoor heated swimming pool has a stunning stained-glass ceiling that twinkles its reflection to the pool below. There’s also a spa bath and a thermal spa, so your relaxation after a wonderful day exploring the delights of Xining is definitely secured. You can keep active while you’re away too at the fitness center. The business and events facilities here are vast with 12 meeting rooms, one of which is the gorgeous Grand Ballroom.

If you decide to book a room rather than a suite, then be sure to opt for one with Club Millesime access. The rooms are spacious at 40m2 and are very beautiful spaces, but discerning travelers will undoubtedly be tempted by the grandeur of the Suites. The Junior Suite alone stands at 60m2, but the vast Prestige and Premium Prestige Suites are simply stunning and include separate living rooms and walk-in closets.

The Sofitel Xining promises to take you on a gastronomic journey. With influences from Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, as well as other regions, a true treat awaits. There are its 3 restaurants and a cocktail bar in the lobby.

8. Sofitel London Heathrow

The Sofitel London Heathrow connects directly to Terminal 5 via a walkway and is the only 5-star hotel at Heathrow Airport. It offers several bars, including a Perrier Jouët bar and the Sphere lobby bar, and restaurants, including La Belle Epoque, which has been awarded 3 AA Rosettes and is London Heathrow’s only fine-dining restaurant.

The hotel itself has an impressive and busy entrance with orchids and fountains. The rooms above are split into 6 wings adjoined by open-air walkways that sit under massively high glass atriums. Hotel rooms either look outwards to the airport or inwards over a part of the hotel. For example, some rooms overlook the restaurants, others the marble foyers and reception areas. Our room (room 6108) looked out to the roadway coming into the airport. Since none of the rooms look onto the runway or planes, there is little to choose between the inward-facing and outward-facing rooms.

The room was pretty standard for an airport hotel, all be it with plenty of space, upgraded finishings, and amenities, and superbly quiet quadruple glazing (double glazing, then a gap, then double glazing again). The blackout curtains were excellent, and the bed was large, so it was easy to get a good night’s sleep. The black marble bathroom (see pictures below) had a walk-in shower, bath with a TV screen in the wall and offered ESPA toiletries.

There is also a spacious 24-hour fitness studio, with free access for hotel residents, which I didn’t try.

La Belle Epoque is the best restaurant in London Heathrow. The food is outstanding, the staff are both kind, and they seem to be incredibly proud of the amazing food they are serving. If you are doing an overnight stay at London Heathrow, a meal at La Belle Epoque meal is simply a must-do. In fact, plan a trip to Heathrow specifically to eat here. I guarantee you will be impressed.

What made our room interesting is that it included Club Millésime Lounge access. Guests at the Sofitel in a luxury room or suite automatically get access to Club Millésime. Guests in standard rooms can upgrade to use the lounge for £75 GBP per person.

The lounge isn’t big, with seating for around 40 people, but it provides a space to relax and includes internet access, food and drinks. The complimentary continental breakfast was a decent spread with a buffet choice of scrambled egg and sausages, smoked salmon, bread and jams, cereals, fruit, berries, yogurts, and smoothies, as well as juices, coffees, and teas from a machine. I can’t comment on the afternoon tea, as I did not experience it. In the evening, there was a good selection of beers (bottles of Peroni, Asaki, and one other), wines, and spirits. The food offering was not huge and served on very small plates, but there was just about enough to fill you up with noodle vegetable dishes, chicken skewers, fried fish, greek salad, cheese, biscuits, and nuts.

9. Sofitel Tamuda Bay Beach

A newly developed resort on Morocco’s Mediterranean coast, Tamuda Bay is the perfect travel destination if you’re looking for a relaxing holiday with plenty of sunshine, a beautiful beach, great shops and restaurants, and maybe some watersports.

The modern bathrooms offer both shower and bathtub, while each room also boasts a private terrace. Some rooms offer a garden or pool view, while others have a view of the sea and larger rooms incorporate a single sofa bed suitable for a child. The hotel has a wide range of suites, where you can enjoy additional space, and some of which boast panoramic Mediterranean views, kitchenettes, generous private terraces, and whirlpool baths. There is even the option to stay in your own villa, with a private pool and butler service, which could be a great idea if you are traveling with friends or family.

Le Marche des Saveurs is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offers a sophisticated setting with chic, contemporary décor. The cuisine is international with plenty of choices – Moroccan, French, Italian and Asian dishes all feature on the menu. The Koudiaz bar is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink in a cozy and relaxed atmosphere, and there are tasting plates available if you’re feeling peckish. Make sure you try one of their signature cocktails.

There is a beautiful heated pool to sunbathe beside, and of course, the beach is just a stone’s throw away. Kids are well looked after with plenty of activities on offer, and there is a gym as well as a spa offering massages and traditional Hammam treatments. The 28 villas are perfect for families. Bathed in natural light, each features a private heated pool and exclusive butler service.

Finally, Le Café Kasbah features international dishes and culinary demonstrations with food prepared both by wok and at tagine stations.
