What should pilots do if there is smoke in their cockpit? Good question! If the cockpit of an aircraft fills with smoke this is not an ideal scenario.
The pilots on Delta flight DL1975 this week reported that there was smoke in their cockpit. What did they do? They opened the windows!
Luckily the plane was on the ground at this point. I do remember travelling on an Aurigny plane from Alderney in the Channel Islands many years ago with a somewhat similar issue. This was one of those plans where you sit right behind the pilot and the pilot was in no hurry to shut the cockpit window as it was a hot day.
In fact, the plane took off and flew for a while with the window open. Then again, the old boxy G-Joey planes pictured here weren’t exactly airtight. The Delta plane was checked over following the smoke incident and is now back in the sky but you can see the flight alert below.
In the “good old days” smoke in the cockpit would have meant the pilot had just lit up… Nowadays some pilots still vape onboard…
