Clarity On What Caused This Deadly Plane Crash

News

In March 2018 a plane crashed at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) killing 51 people, including the pilots, and injuring 20 others. At the time, the cause was unknown.

Nepalese aviation officials officially released a report last week and in the report it outlined that the crashed was caused by a disoriented pilot who tried to land the plane in “sheer desperation” and misaligned the aircraft with the runway.

The pilot was reportedly smoking in the cockpit, emotionally disturbed and suffering from a lack of sleep when he took the helm of the ill-fated twin-prop Bombardier Dash 8, according to the Associated Press.

“Landing was completed in sheer desperation after sighting the runway, at very close proximity and very low altitude,” said investigators.

Airlines have a duty of care to monitor the psychological state of their pilots. This isn’t the first time a plane has been bought down because of the mental state of the pilot. I am reminded of the dreadful Germanwings suicide pilot, in which i6 German school children were killed.
