250 passengers and 15 crew aboard United Airlines flight 179 from New York were flying to Hong Kong, when they diverted a military airfield in sub-Arctic Canada.
The Boeing 777 took off last Saturday afternoon from Newark for the 8,052-mile flight across the Arctic to Hong Kong. When a passenger became ill the plane to divert to Goose Bay (pictured above). they landed at about 9:30 pm local time, the sick passenger was removed and the plane refuelled, but instead of taking off, the plane remained on the ground due to a problem with a door.
During this ordeal, one aircraft door was open even though it was minus 28F (-33C) outside meaning that although the cabin was kept warm, those by the door got pretty cold. The flight was stranded for 16 hours in total and was then returned to New York 26 hours after the original flight had left. What a nightmare.
