I love this news piece. The story is about the national airline of Zimbabwe, Air Zimbabwe, which is shutting down for a few days because they have no aircraft that they are able to fly!

Their 33-year old Boeing 737-200 went out of service on 30th December needing around 45 days of maintenance. It may or may not return to the “fleet”. The 737 had been flying to Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, and Dar es Salaam.

The other member of their “fleet” is a Boeing 767-200, which also needs maintenance that’s expected to take a few days.

This leaves Air Zimbabwe in a bad way with no planes to fly. The airline is owned by Zimbabwe’s government and is “undergoing a bankruptcy restructuring to clear its debt thought to be more than $334 million USD.” They apparently aren’t paying on any debt accrued prior to October 4, 2018.

According to Gary from View From The Wing, they did have a profitable route. Harare to London, but stopped flying it because they thought their planes might be seized to pay off unpaid debts. They stopped flying their Johannesburg route after the country’s first lady found a topless model in a hotel room with her sons in South Africa.

Conclusion

Zimbabwe used to be known as the breadbasket of Southern Africa. A stunning country to visit, with unbelievably beautiful countryside and fertile land. It is so sad to see a country with such potential in such a mess.

The result is that Air Zimbabwe is probably the worst airline in the world, simply due to its lack of planes.
