Worried About WOW Air? Flight Cancellations May Indicate Death Spiral…

News

WOW Air has been announcing ongoing cuts to their US route network. They cancelled flights to Cincinnati, Cleveland, and St. Louis, soon after launching them.

Now they have cancelled flights to Dallas Fort Worth and New York JFK and Pittsburgh. It is reducing flights to Orlando and Los Angeles and this week, cancelled flights to Chicago

This may be because Wow air was leasing three A330s, but have had to return two.

Is WOW Air Going Bust?

This question is impossible to answer although these cancellations suggest that the airline is not in a happy place! There was hope when Icelandair announced the $18m acquisition of its low-cost competitor WOW Air. But this week, Icelandair walked away from the deal, so it looks likely that this airline won’t be around for much longer.

Even if they do hold on, there seems a good chance that the specific route you book on may well be cancelled. If I had WOW tickets I would certainly feel rather alarmed after the recent onslaught of bad news.

The good news is that the airline IS still flying, so if you are flying before the end of the year, one would hope that you will be fine. If you have booked weeks or even months in advance, then it would be wise to put together a backup plan.

One idea, which came from the travel blog Head for Points, suggests booking back-up Avios redemptions on the same routes which can be cancelled if WOW does survive.

Other Cheap Transatlantic Fight Options

I fly on free British Airways Avios earned by my FREE Amex Gold Card. Contact me for a referral which will get you 22,000 Amex bonus points, 2,000 more than the usual offering (when you spend 2,000GBP in your first three months). You can also collect other airline miles with this Amex including Virgin Flying Club miles which are also good for transatlantic flights.

If you are US based and need points, a brilliant way to load up on a massive bonus of points is outlined in our easy guide.

We recommend only booking on legacy carriers if you want complete peace of mind (whether on points or for cash). There are still some great deals on google flights for British Airways, American Airlines and TAP Portugal if you can bear stops so stick to these more reliable airlines where possible.
