Southwest Airlines Hawaiian flights are expected to launch within weeks! Following the announcement from Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly that Southwest Airlines is “very close” to gaining approval for extended flights above the Pacific from California, we still can’t book flights. Why?
According to The Points Guy, the reason Southwest hasn’t opened flights from California to Hawaii yet is that its planes are not ETOPS approved.
Southwest only has twinjets as it operates a fleet made up only of Boeing 737s. The Federal Aviation Administration mandates how far, in minutes, a twin-engine aircraft can legally operate from an alternate airport en-route based on having one, single engine operative. Southwest needs to wait a bit longer than anticipated for the FAA has yet to approve the airline for extended operations to allow it to fly over the Pacific.
Once approval is granted by the FAA, Southwest’s fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft will have no problem making the flight across the Pacific to the islands and you can book your cheap flights to Hawaii.
