Wilderness resorts offer the ultimate way to connect with nature. Stay overnight in the middle of nowhere and you will fall asleep to the sounds of nature, underneath starlit skies. Wake up to birdsong and the smell of dew on the leaves. It’s the stuff of dreams.
I have already outlined the best wilderness resorts in the world, but let’s face it, not all of us can afford $1000+ per night. Those with a more moderate budget can still enjoy some glorious wilderness experiences for a very reasonable price. I have picked my favourite ideas for 2019 below and I also include some ideas that are really, really cheap!
Talking of really, really cheap, take a look at our luxury travel auctions for a really cheap luxury vacation.
Please also remember to book all your luxury hotel stays and premium flights with our luxury travel concierge for free upgrades, free breakfasts, free hotel credit and VIP gifts at hotels like Four Seasons, Aman, Andaz, JW Marriott, SPG Luxury Collection and more… for the same price as the hotel’s own websites. We can usually beat the prices on chain hotel bookings too, so ask us for a free quote.
Epic Canadian Rockies Drive
Put your tent in your bag and fly into Calgary this summer between July 5-14, 2019 for the greatest outdoor event in the world, the Calgary Stampede. Spend a day or two pretending to be a cowboy and gorging on hot dogs before renting a car and hitting Highway 3 for the ultimate drive across the Rockies. These magical mountains offer hundreds of great and well-maintained campsites where you can put up your tent, light up a fire and toast marshmallows under the stars. Be sure to watch out for bears and make sure you route past the jaw-dropping Lake Louise pictured above (it really is that blue and it’s worth popping in for a tea at the Fairmont which overlooks this crazy coloured lake). Drive all the way across the mountains to the beautiful oceanside city of Vancouver before flying home. This route is a must do wilderness adventure and you will find a great route plan here.
Club1Hotels is a great place to go to pick up cheap flight to Calgary, Vancouver or anywhere else. You can join Club1Hotels FREE which immediately gives you access to discounts and coupons to use against flights, hotels and cruises.
Trout Point Lodge
Trout Point Lodge is one of the best hotels in the world to watch meteor showers. This wilderness retreat is located in the heart of the UNESCO SW Nova Scotia Biosphere Reserve. It is surrounded by a pine and spruce forest, secluded in nature and is on the banks of the Tusket River right next to the Tobeatic Wilderness area. Here you might enjoy sightings of black bear, turtles, flying squirrels, grouse, deer, beaver, owls, loons, eagles and even moose. This one isn’t cheap but is a bucket list must do if you want to see any of these animals in the wild.
Linden Retreat Croatia
My third choice will surprise you and is one that you may not have heard of, but Linden Retreat is our pick of the top five best nature resorts in Europe and offers an exclusive retreat packed with wonderful back to nature activities. Forget your day to day stresses and worries and immerse yourself in another world, a simpler and altogether more beautiful one.
New England Wilderness
If you are based on the East Coast of America, New England offers your most convenient Wilderness. Breathe in the fresh air, go hiking, mountain biking and swim in clear mountain lakes. Little Lyford in central Maine’s Moosehead Lake region offers 9 free-standing cabins which sleep one to six people, complete with a porch, woodstove, gas lamp and cold-running water during summer and fall. There is also a bunkhouse which can accommodate 12 guests. Pillows and blankets are provided, but you need to bring your own sheets and a towel. With rates starting at $71 per person per night this is definitely a cheap and fulfilling wilderness getaway.
Finally back to the UK, Burnbake Lodges is situated in Dorset’s beautiful Isle of Purbeck. Burnbake’s 22 luxury lodges are set in a beautiful park between Corfe Castle and Studland on the Jurassic Coast, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If snuggling by a cosy wood burning fire in the middle of a forest appeals, this is the place for you. If countryside walks, days on the beach and exploring ancient castles appeals, this is the place for you. If lazing in your hot tub with a glass of wine in a secluded woodland glade, following an alfresco BBQ, sound like heaven, this is the place for you!
