Location: United Kingdom
I do love a good excuse to get away with all my family or, even better sometimes, a large group of friends! Luxury travel shared with others is just the best; combine that with the gorgeous countryside of the Forest of Dean and you’ve got Forest House.
Forest House is tucked in the traditional village of Mitcheldean which lies on the fringes of the Forest of Dean, a historical and cultural region in the western part of the county of Gloucestershire. There’s much to do and explore in the vicinity. You are well positioned to reach the wonders of the Wye Valley and this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as Gloucestershire and the always magnificent Cotswolds. There are also plenty of active pursuits on your doorstop which I always find work fantastically with a group; head to the cycle trails and down hill courses, try abseiling and caving at Symonds Yat rock or canoeing and a high wire rope course if you’re feeling adventurous. Slightly more sedate activities include exploring The Secret Forest, a beautiful woodland, now reclaimed by nature, head underground at Clearwell Caves or you can even ride a steam train through the forest!
Style & Character
Your arrival sets the scene perfectly. Drive through the gates and into the beautiful walled gardens of this delightful country home. The huge house has ben sensitively and carefully restored and is packed with original features and character, the reception hall alone has a fabulous ornate staircase and tiled floors as well as lovely views of the garden. The interior is comfortable and just modern enough to still respect the old house, splashes of colour throughout create a welcoming, sunny vibe.
Service & Facilities
The property benefits from two lounges, the larger has wonderful high ceilings, stripped wooden floors and an inviting wood burner; it’s a great place to snuggle up and watch a movie. The other lounge, also known as the snug, has a baby grand piano so the more musical in your gang can keep everyone entertained into the evenings. There’s lots of extras to make your home from home stay as comfortable and easy as possible; bed linen and towels are provided, as is charcoal for your BBQ, there’s ample off-road parking and complimentary Wi-Fi, a fab selection of board games and books are provided, as well as cots and high chairs for any little members of your party. The owner and caretaker are always on hand should any issues arise and are happy to assist where required.
Forest House comfortably sleeps 16 guests across its 8 charming bedrooms. Most are spacious double rooms, one of the rooms is slightly smaller and one is a twin room, both of these would be ideal for children. There are three bathrooms and a separate WC too, one of the bathrooms is ensuite.
Food & Drink
The traditional farmhouse kitchen is warmed by an AGA so feels wonderfully cosy all year round. It’s a sociable kitchen and is the ideal room to cook up a feast with your nearest and dearest. It’s well equipped with all the mod cons that you could need and the utility room also houses a washing machine. Serve up casual meals on the huge wooden table in the middle of the kitchen, or grab a pew and crack open the wine while someone else does the hard work! Formal dinners are perfect served at the large table in the dining room which overlooks the garden, and if the weather permits and the garden tempts you out then there’s seating outside to dine al fresco and you can fire up that BBQ too! There’s a supermarket a short stroll away so you can stock up with supplies, the local pub is also within walking distance so if you fancy as night off cooking you know where to head.
