Book A Hotel

England is experiencing the most unusually balmy summer and with this in mind, I thought I would share the hotels with the most beautiful gardens across England.

We start with the Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa in Bath. This hotel remains one of my all-time favourites in England as it offers immaculate sophistication on the iconic Royal Crescent in Bath. This hotel has two gardens. The main garden, where you can take breakfast under umbrellas, lounge on sunbeds or grab an evening drink, surrounded by a festive array of colourful flowers, is everything you would want from an English country garden. It is fragrant, peaceful and offers a complete escape. Add to this, that the staff at this hotel are also exceptional and will serve you whatever you desire, from a Financial Times to read to a Pimms to sip on in the sunshine. This really is the perfect English Garden experience.

There is also a second, less-well-known garden at this hotel. At the front of the hotel, actually in the centre of the iconic Royal Crescent, sits an enormous patch of lawn which is owned by the hotel. This beautifully kept lawn is available for fun for hotel guests. In my son’s case, this became a superb football pitch, but when he was smaller, it would have been a great place to take him for a toddle/run.

In the number two position is a Cotswolds retreat called Whatley Manor. Last time we stayed here it poured with rain, so we sadly didn’t get to enjoy the garden in all its glory, but the roses winding up the walls, the flower-filled beds and the stretch of lawn that looks out upon rural fields, makes this hotel garden on of the best in England.

My number three position is taken by The Greenway hotel in the Cotswolds. This garden is lovely and the perfect place to grab a beer in the sunshine. The view is even better, looking up at one of the prettiest of Cotswold hills.

Finally, in position number four is the Master Builders in Bucklers Hard in the New Forest. The magical view from this tiny hotel is a vista across pretty Buckler’s Hard and the estuary beyond. You sit up the hill and overlook a sloped lawns dotted with gnarled trees. Beyond this, boats potter up and down and the sunset reflects off the water.

Wherever you pick, you must enjoy the very best of England with an evening in an Engish country garden this summer.

We first reviewed the Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa in Bath in 2015, and I'm delighted to share that this luxury hotel is as polished as it was seven years ago. It is also worth mentioning that the Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is part of the Virtuoso agency scheme, meaning that you can book a room here (or at any other luxury hotel in the world) via our luxury travel concierge, and you will get brilliant extra benefits such as free breakfast for two, resort credit and room upgrade.

If I was quizzed about England's Cotswolds and what all the fuss was about, I'd point the inquisitive towards The Greenway Hotel and Spa, a member of the Eden Hotel Collection and Small Luxury Hotels. Turn off a busy road, travel up the hotel's long driveway, and you are instantly transported into the heart of the English countryside. There are picturesque villages like Stowe On The Wold nearby, but dear reader, should I have felt bad in having no real desire to leave the Greenway?
