Location
The 10-acre estate is perched precariously on a stunning hilltop overlooking the Mediterranean and the Moroccan coast. The views are simply incredible and no matter how you choose to spend your time here, make sure you reserve some for simply contemplating the epic mountains and the azure blue sea below. If you do wish to explore further afield (top tip: decide once you get there, you may well not ever wish to leave!), then the estate is within easy reach of the historic cities of Granada (1.5 hrs), Cordoba (2hrs) and cosmopolitan Malaga (under 1hr).
Style & Character
There are two stylish private villas on the estate; El Carligto and the Hunting Lodge. Both are luxurious, achingly chic, and staying here offers a truly serene escape. El Carligto is built on the site of an old farmhouse and is an elegant, rustic retreat with tapestries and French and Spanish antiques inside and seemingly endless private terraces and beautifully landscaped gardens outside, as well as over-sized fireplaces both inside and outside! The Hunting Lodge is at an even higher altitude and is more contemporary and styled as a rustic-style bohemian villa, with local art and hand-picked art deco furniture. You can rent one or both of the private villas as they are walled in and set far enough apart (150 meters) to be completely private but are still close enough to be shared should you wish to take over the entire estate with 14 of your nearest and dearest.
Service & Facilities
The villas have all the usual amenities that luxury travelers would expect from a five-star hotel, just with the added bonus of exclusivity and privacy. Both the villas have stunning private swimming pool areas surrounded by those gardens and with views so magnificent that time almost seems to stand still while you gaze.
The owners of El Carligto Estate pride themselves on offering a bespoke luxury concierge service. This service allows you to partake in the finest gastronomic and luxury travel experiences in the area. One day, charter a catamaran and explore the coast, the next a professional Jamon carver and sommelier will give a personalized session at your villa with a wine tasting, Jamon tasting, cheese tasting and he’ll even teach you the art of Jamon carving. You can take an on-site cookery course, enjoy a Flamenco performance, go on a cultural tour, hike the adjacent mountain nature reserve with a professional guide or simply relax at your villa with a soothing poolside massage.
Rooms
El Carligto sleeps up to eight guests across four double bedrooms, while The Hunting Lodge, sleeps six across three bedrooms. All the rooms are heavenly but the master at El Carligto is rather a treat with a unique hammam-style bath, balcony terrace, and outdoor shower.
Food & Drink
You are welcome of course to self-cater and your hosts happily arrange a pre-arrival shop for you or they can furnish you with local restaurant tips (and make the reservations for you). But part of the experience of staying at El Carligto Estate is definitely the amazing cuisine prepared by the resident professional chef who serves creative and innovative dishes to excite and delight.
Of all the marvelous services available to you, the newly developed “Seven Chefs” initiative has got to be the ultimate. The owners have recently expanded the troupe of chefs to a full seven professionals; allowing you to be catered for by a different chef every night of the week! It’s a novel and really a rather fabulous way to enjoy a variety of Spanish and international cuisines. Some of the chefs boast Michelin ratings, there is an expert in Japanese and Asian fusion, in local Mediterranean seafood, in vegetarian and vegan cuisine, and of course traditional Spanish delicacies. The icing on the cake; the sommelier will hand-pick local wines for you to sample to perfectly compliment the cuisine; a divine experience fit for this divine retreat.
