Have you ever left home and felt like you have forgotten something? I had this feeling as we drove away from my house on my last vacation. It turns out the feeling was justified as I had forgotten my coat and my son’s scooter. Now the scooter was, perhaps, forgivable. We have only just started taking it with us and I had left until the morning to dismantle and pack. Coats? Well forgetting my coat in April was just idiotic.
With that in mind, here’s my idiot’s guide of what you absolutely must pack with a few left field suggestions thrown in…
Passport, Wallet, Phone & Tickets
All are essential if you travel abroad. Worst case, you can buy what you forget. If you have tickets, you will need these too (although nowadays, most tickets are emailed to you, so make sure you can access your email from your phone).
Your Lumie: To Help You Beat Jet-Lag
The Lumie Zest is such a compact light that you can use it to reduce your jet lag before your flight, and you can also take it with you on your travels. This 2-in-1 device combines a standalone SAD light with a wake-up alarm that functions as a dawn simulator. You can, therefore, set it to whichever time zone you prefer, by changing the time of your dawn, and get your body used to the different wakeup times before you travel and on the way home.
It is small and easy to forget, but your body’s time clock will thank you if you remember to take it with you.
Whatever you expect the weather to be like.. it might let you down. If it does, either by being too hot or too cold, layers of clothing that you can add or takeaway is the solution. Make sure you also pack your coat and some pyjamas.
Swimwear is small and can easily be forgotten. If you forget your bikini or trunks and you are lucky, the resort will sell them, but at a high price. The alternative… well, no-one wants to see you in your underpants by the pool! You can pick up some fantastic designer swimwear for a bargain in our Luxury Travel Auction.

Makeup & Toiletries
Obviously. Include a shaver to avoid hairy legs and worse.
A basic medical kit with painkillers, plasters, insect repellant, Imodium, antiseptic creams will help keep you safe and healthy.
They take up a lot of space but make you look great!
For noisy hotel rooms.
Electric Adapters & Associated Devices
For us that includes phone (again), laptops, Nintendo switch and iPad.
Your Son’s Scooter
Added into the number 11. spot is one thing that may well only be relevant to me. For my family, a scooter is an utter essential to avoid very-sad-little-boy syndrome…
Ours is a micro scooter. It’s super robust and ideal for travel!
