In this article, I share how I have built up huge volumes of air miles so that I can fly about in Business Class. The picture above shows the free champagne I enjoyed on my free British Airways flight in European Business Class to the French Riviera last week. This is actually a very cheap route to travel in Business Class from London, costing just 9,000 British Airways Avios air miles (Peak) or 7,750 Avios (Off-Peak) + £25 taxes and fees, one-way. In European Business Class you get more space in your seat, a seat up front, priority boarding and baggage, a bite to eat, free alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and lounge access at London Heathrow.
European Business Class does not offer lie-flat seats like those you will experience in British Airways international Business Class but by being clever with my credit cards, I have built up a stack of miles so that I can fly in Business wherever I want.
Fly Me For Free! I Want My Free Miles!
My air miles come from my American Express Rewards which convert directly to British Airways Avios, Delta SkyMiles (along with other airline miles). The FREE Amex Gold Card is an incredible deal and almost undoubtedly the best starter credit card for anyone entering the miles & points game.
It offers a huge free bonus of 22,000-25,000 Membership Rewards (= 22-25k Avios or SkyMiles) when you hit spend targets. You can apply for the US card right here. For the UK card, you will need to drop me an email for a referral link to get extra bonus points.
One crucial thing to remember is that if you apply for yourself AND you apply for your partner (and even other family members and pool your points) you can double, treble or even quadruple your bonus miles balances. If you are US based, you can also fly to Hawaii or Europe and more for free by taking out this excellent additional (free) credit card. Read more in our easy guide.
What If I Am Happy To Pay For My Business Class Flight But Want A Discount?
If you want to book any premium flights or (luxury hotels), drop our Travel Concierge a line for free room upgrades, breakfasts, credit and more. We are almost always cheaper for Premium Economy, Business & First Class flights. Another suggestion is to hang out for sales. I try and cover the most relevant deals on luxury travel diary in our travel news which is worth bookmarking. News channels like Flipboard are yet another great way to keep on top of the best deals.
Now Have My Flight, I Want A Cheap Hotel
We stay at the top hotels in the world, cheaper (I won’t say cheap as they still cost an arm and a leg), by travelling out of season or in the shoulder season. I am currently staying at the fantastic Royal Riviera, bathed in sunshine, for a fraction of the rack rate. In August a room costs around 1000€. In low season prices go as low as 190€!
Book any luxury hotel, ideally not in high season, so that you can take advantage of discounted rates, via our Luxury Travel Concierge and you will also get a free room upgrade, free breakfast and free gift (free massages are the gift at this hotel). We offer similarly great benefits across all luxury hotels including the Four Seasons, Aman, Starwood Luxury Collection and more.
No No No, I Want My Hotel Free Too!
It’s back to the credit card game I’m afraid. This time I personally use the Starwood SPG Card as I am saving for a return trip to the JW Marriott in Venice. This card offers me around a 4% return on my spend, if I use my points at this hotel.
The UK Starwood Amex Card offers a free bonus of 11,000 SPG points and the US Starwood Amex Card offers a huge 25,000 bonus Starpoints. Drop me an email for a referral link to each card.
