Starwood Preferred Guest is one of the top of the loyalty programs for frequent flyers luxury travellers and points and miles collectors. This is because Starwood hotels are great plus SPG points transfer to 30+ airline partners at a 1:1 ratio. I outline why SPG Starpoints are so great in more detail below.

You can also book award nights at thousands of hotels both within the Starwood SPG brand but also in the Marriott & Ritz-Carlton brand, with a 1:3 transfer ratio of Starpoints to Marriott Rewards. For luxury travellers the Luxury Collection of Starwood hotels offers the absolute best of the best. Remember to book these with our Luxury Travel Concierge to get extra free benefits at Starwood Luxury Collection hotels such as free breakfast, room upgrades and free resort credit.

In addition, your SPG points can be redeemed for one-of-a-kind experiences via SPG Moments.

I personally use the UK Starwood SPG Card as I am saving for a return trip to the JW Marriott in Venice. This card offers me around a 4% return on my spend, if I use my points at this hotel. The UK Starwood Amex Card offers a free bonus of 11,000 SPG points (after you make £2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months). Drop me an email for a referral link for this card to get 11,000 instead of the standard 10,000 points.

The US Starwood Amex Card offers a huge 25,000 bonus Starpoints (after you make $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months). Drop me an email for a referral link for this card.

You Can Book Your Entire Vacation Just From The Points Bonus

SPG properties range from base Category 1 properties costing just 2,000 points per night, through to the highest tier Category 7 properties which cost 35,000 points per night. At the lowest end the properties are less appealing but you could theoretically book 12 nights at a Category 1 property for the 25,000 SPG credit card bonus.

Marriott properties start at 7,500 Marriott Rewards points per night and rise to 45,000 Marriott points for Category 9 hotels, such as the Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel which I have reviewed. In SPG points, this works out at 2,500 points for Category 1 hotels, so you could theoretically book 10 nights at a Category 1 property for the 25,000 SPG credit card bonus.

You Can Book A Package With An Airmile Bonus Points Bonus

If you want to stay at a top level property like the JW Marriott in Venice, which is category 9, you can stay here for a week on the Marriott Reward Plus Hotel & Air Package for 320,000 Marriott rewards or 106,666 SPG points (as you can transfer them over at a rate of 1SPG=3 Marriott) PLUS you get 55,000 Air Miles (in my case I collect Avios which I value at around £0.02 per point making 55,000 worth £1100 to me). With the Marriott Reward Plus Hotel & Air Package, 106,666 spg points will get me a stay worth 1446€ ($3005)+ £1100 ($1549) of Avios. This values my 106,666 SPG points at $4,554/£3,232 = $0.042/£0.03.

Alternatively, if I book 5 nights, I can book 4 nights and get the 5th free which costs 180,000 Marriott points (60K SPG) in mid-August. I could book this for cash and it would cost me 1,807€ (356.4€ per night). This values my Marriott points at $1,807/180,000 = 0.0116€ or $0.01 and my SPG points at $0.03.

If you want to book the Reward Plus Hotel & Air Package you can collect other airline miles. Participating Airlines also include Aeromexico, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Copa Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, GOL/Varig, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia Airlines, Virgin Atlantic.

You Can EARN Bonus SPG on Marriott & Ritz Stays

The SPG cards now earn 2 points per dollar at Marriott and Ritz properties (= 6 Marriott Rewards). The Marriott co-brand cards only earn 5 points per dollar spent at Marriott properties. This means the SPG card gives you better value than the Marriot card on resort spend.

Sharing Points

You can combine points for free with anyone sharing the same residential address for a minimum 30 days. This means that you can transfer points between your SPG accounts in 1,000 point increments.

SPG Moments

SPG Moments offers one-of-a-kind life experiences that you can bid on, auction style, using your SPG points. You could get a backstage pass for your favourite comedian or band or enjoy a VIP access at sports events.

Earn SPG Gold Status

If you reach spend targets on your SPG Credit Card, you’ll be given Gold status.

If you haven’t yet taken out a Starwood card, we highly recommend applying for a Starwood Card if you’re eligible. Drop me an email for a referral link for either the UK or US card.
