This morning I woke at the Fairmont Monte Carlo and expected to be greeted by Mediterranean vistas and a sunrise in the distance. Can you imagine my surprise when I pulled back the curtains and was instead met with a head-on view into the bridge of a massive industrial ship along with all its radars peering into my room?
Further back, the boat was carrying mountains of gravel, as the Principality of Monaco is currently in the process of reclaiming land for a new commercial and residential peninsula.
This new marina and housing is part of a 2 billion euro development made on reclaimed land, and the Fairmont gets a birds-eye view of the work as it progresses; Quite fun, if a little intrusive first thing in the morning… I certainly won’t be rushing to sunbathe on the Fairmont’s balconies before this stage is completed!
