I rarely fly in Economy or Coach, but I rarely pay for my premium seats either. I wish I could say that airlines loved travel bloggers and threw free First Class seats at us, but this simply isn’t true. We have to play the point-collecting game too!

With this in mind, here are my four favourite credit cards to help you score an upgrade on your next flight:

Based In America? Try This Free Card!

If you are US based, you can fly to Asia, Hawaii or Europe for free (or upgrade yourself) by taking out just one (free) credit card. Read more in our easy guide.

Based In the UK? Go Gold

Amex Gold offers 22,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend £2,000 within 3 months. To get the full 22,000 points you must apply through a referral link (contact me if you would like me to refer you via our Luxury Travel Concierge page).

22,0000 Amex Membership Rewards converts to 22,000 Avios which is worth £440 to me. I always use my Avios to upgrade my flights around Europe. You can read my full review of the American Express Gold Card.

Want A Free Hotel Stay Too?

You may ALSO want to consider applying for the SPG Amex which will net you another 11,000 SPG or Avios. You will get this sign-up bonus whether you have applied for the Gold Card above or not the two are unrelated.

Collecting SPG will get you a stay somewhere lovely like the JW Marriott in Venice or you can convert them to Avios and use them to upgrade your next flight!

Don’t Get Conned Into Paying Massive Bank Charges

Inevitably you will spend while you are away. I use my UK Curve Card for cash machine withdrawals outside the UK. Curve cash withdrawals are subject to a £2 fee plus 1% FX fee which is a great deal.

Use my Curve Card referral link and immediately get £5 free money loaded onto your card.

Even better, if you spend on the UK high street, the Curve Card gives you 1.5-3% cashback at most major retailers. I have listed all the retail partners that you get a 1.5-3% cashback at on this review of the Curve Card.
