Doha, the capital of Qatar, remains a relatively unknown holiday destination, when compared to the nearby Dubai, but it should not be ignored as it offers a less commercial snapshot of the Middle East. Now is the time to visit this magical destination before the masses descend.
Qatar tops the list of the richest countries in the world with the highest GDP per capita. It’s rapid growth has created some stunning architecture and cultural highlights, such as the Museum of Islamic Art.
If you are flying with Qatar Airways, you will most likely layover in Qatar, but don’t just stay in the airport. Doha is a destination in it’s own right, with some wonderful beaches and hotels.
We have picked our four favourite hotels below. The Grand Hyatt Doha has a brilliant Club Lounge and a particularly gorgeous and safe sandy beach. Here, the water is shallow and the water temperature is around 30 C in it’s lagoon-style bay. Because of the way the water flows in the lagoon, this area of sea has become very saline, so you get to swim in a very buoyant and pleasantly warm sea.
Another good choice is Banana Island Resort by Anantara, an alcohol-free island with beautiful beaches, just 25 minutes from the heart of Qatar’s vibrant capital. A luxury catamaran ferry will whisk you across the crystal clear water to reach the island or you can arrive by a private helicopter.
The Ritz Carlton Sharq Village is another luxury choice. Modelled on a Sheik’s palace, and highlighting the rustic authenticity of true Islamic architecture, this hotel marries old-world style and modern-day amenities. Sharq Village is just a quick 10-minute ride from the airport, and another 10 minutes from the heart of downtown. Unlike a majority of the high-end hotels in Doha, this luxury property is located on the other side of the bay, which means you get some great views of the city’s skyline from the beach on premises.
Finally, the luxurious 5-star InterContinental Doha is located on the longest private beach in the city and is just minutes from the city centre. It boasts an excellent Club Lounge with spectacular views.
Take your pick from these beachside lovelies, you will not be disappointed.
