American Airlines have had a disaster! A backend technical glitch in the system which enables pilots to select their vacation time, means that too many pilots have request vacation time over the Christmas period. The result? Potentially, not enough pilots to fly passengers home for Christmas!
Once they realised their error, American Airlines have looked into amending time schedules, but the pilots’ union is backing up their right to keep their requested vacation time.
American Airlines is now at the stage of offering time and half pay to get enough pilots for their schedule. If they can’t get their pilots into work they may have to cancel flights out of major hubs including Dallas-Fort Worth, Boston, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City and Charlotte, NC.
American Airlines spokesman Matt Miller says “We are working through this to make sure we take care of our pilots and get our customers to where they need to go over the holidays.”
If you have not yet booked your flight, you may want to consider driving or flying with another airline.
