Some of Europe’s finest beaches can be found on Portugal’s Alentejo coast and as the region is also a National Park there are no hotels on the beaches so it’s lovely and unspoilt. For accommodation which allows both freedom and comfort, stay in one of Monte do Giestal’s charming cottages.
Location
Monte do Giestal – Casas de Campo & SPA, on the Alentejo coast, in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém, is located a pleasant hour and a half’s drive from Lisbon Airport. The cottages are set amidst lush green fields and the Giestal Estate extends over 71 hectares and is completely surrounded by oak trees; this is pure, tranquil rural tourism at its best. The team at Monte do Giestal can also arrange a host of activities in the local area; how about a jeep tour, a romantic boat trip along the Alentejo coast, a fun fishing session, paint ball, archery or abseiling, to name but a few!
Style & Character
The architecture of the cottages is traditional in style so they fit very nicely in the local area. The interior is uncluttered but luxurious with earthy tones and natural materials, but it’s the stunning views that are truly memorable and are what stays with you long after you’ve returned home. The grounds are extensive and are perfect for a bike ride or an afternoon stroll.
Service & Facilities
As well as the individual cottages there are several communal rooms; a games room with a pool table, a comfortable living room and a dining room. Outside is where the real fun is to be had; the outdoor pool is very inviting and there’s a vast terrace where you soak up the sun and enjoy the gentle countryside breeze. There’s also a tennis court, a children’s playground and you can even bring your pets and they can make themselves at home in the estate kennel and cattery! For some serious relaxation, there’s an impressive 300m2 spa with a gym, infrared sauna, Turkish bath, sensations shower, heated swimming pool, relaxation room, Vichy shower, whirlpool in Ofurö tub and a massage room with a tempting range of massages to choose from. In addition to all this, they lay on craft classes so you can get your creative juices flowing! The staff are young, friendly and obliging.
Rooms
There are a choice of 10 quaint cottages all with air conditioning, bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms with fireplaces for that extra-cosy factor on chillier days. There are both 1 and 2 bedroom cottages available and each has a slightly different theme; choose from Cork, Acorn or Olive – the rooms subtlety reflect their theme in interesting and unique ways while still keeping the same earthy tones and casual-chic feel.
Food & Drink
Of course, the cottages are well-equipped for self-catering and there’s lots of delicious local produce to make some amazing home-cooked feasts. But for those days when you fancy a night off, you can simply order your meals to be delivered from a local restaurant and dine on local cuisine just in the comfort of your own cottage. A buffet breakfast with a choice of cereals, breads, meats, cheeses, jams and cooked foods including scrambled eggs and bacon is provided for you and served in the main dining room.
