Review: La Véranda At Grand Hotel Du Cap-Ferrat

La Véranda at the Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel, is the kind of restaurant that you dream of on the French Riviera. It sits under the fairytale-like hundred-year old Aleppo pines, on the main veranda at this Four Seasons hotel, and overlooks the lawns and down to the Mediterranean.

The setting could have been created for a romantic movie; the jazz band, the sculpted bushes that bear pink flowers to match the sky, the gnarled winding trunks of the trees supporting a canopy of fragrant pine needles, the warm breeze. This is how the Four Seasons creates paradise on the French Riviera and evenings really don’t get any better.

It is worth arriving early to sit out in the alfresco bar area to the other side of the patio. This is my favourite place to enjoy an evening drink on the French Riviera. The Four Seasons books a different band every night and it is magic to sit out and enjoy the live music with a drink.

Once you are ready to eat, you are in for an absolute treat at La Véranda. The ambience under the pines is casual but elegant. The staff have that wonderful Four Seasons warmth. They genuinely do care that you have a good time and that you enjoy what you eat. They also made a fuss of our young boy which is always a winner for me.

The food is beautiful and exquisite; an amuse bouche of edible leaves carved out of a crispy cheese, mouthwatering pasta and fish dishes that are full of flavour. The lamb dish was probably my favourite, which is high praise considering I am almost a vegetarian. I rarely eat red meat but this dish was melt-in-the-mouth delicious. In fact, I can honestly say that I have never eaten lamb that tasted anything like this; so fresh, with the flavour of herbs and happiness. And to the desserts. My husband’s favourite dessert in the world has always been the lemon tart at Theo Randall’s restaurant at the Intercontinental Park Lane. That is until now. The best lemon tart in the world trophy now sits with the chef at La Véranda on Cap Ferrat. The other desserts were equally good.

Amazing food, magical setting. We will be back.
