Cambodia is a wonderfully welcoming country with a tragic history. During the brutal reign of the Khmer Rouge, 30% of the population was massacred, including almost everyone who had an education, could read or write or spoke a foreign language. The country is now rebuilding, but the loss of skills, knowledge and labour from a generation has had a devastating impact – 14% children die before the age of 5, more than 45% children are stunted due to malnutrition and only 23% of children reach secondary school.
HUSK Cambodia supports some of the poorest people in the community, many living on $40/month or less. In addition to supporting families with clean water and housing, the charity runs an English-language school to ensure children receive full-time education (state school is only provided half-time) and a workshop, where the poorer women in the village earn an income from selling toy animals, bags and hotel uniforms. Thanks in part to the donations received at last year’s event, the most recent offering from HUSK is a vocational training workshop for the older teenagers to learn key life skills and improve their chances of employment – these are children who have never even seen a computer before. HUSK doesn’t simply give aid to relieve poverty now, but provides people the shelter, education and skills required for them to support themselves long-term.
