Free Upgrade To Premium Economy On American Airlines

We’ve already reviewed American Airlines Premium Economy seating that’s currently available on Boeing 787-9s. American is now offering free and paid upgrades to Premium Economy to it’s Economy passengers.

Premium Economy offers an upgraded seating with better recline, food and more leg room. It also usually offers an amenity kit and includes drinks. It does not offer lie-flat seats although the Premium Economy Seats offered on Norwegian Airlines recline enough to get a reasonable sleep. I have outlined the best Premium Economy airlines in the world.

There is currently no way to redeem miles to upgrade to, or to travel in, American Airlines Premium Economy, but on 20 September, American launched its upgrade program for coach passengers who want to travel in more luxury. Upgrades will happen at check-in when seats are available. All passengers should be able to pay to upgrade to Premium, but ConciergeKey and Executive Platinum members should be offered a complimentary upgrade where available (increased taxes may, however, be charged).

If there is more than one passenger travelling on the same reservation as the ConciergeKey or Executive Platinum member checking in, they should also receive the free upgrade.

So next time you travel on American Airlines, if you are flying on their international Boeing 787-9s or a Boeing 777-200 which have undergone a retrofit to include Premium Economy seating, check-in early and if you are not a ConciergeKey or Executive Platinum member, ask for a paid upgrade and your flight will be a lot more comfortable.
