The next time you visit Johannesburg, pay a visit to So Yum for some unforgettable Chinese cuisine served with an innovative approach and a lovely bustling ambiance. They truly live up to their name!

So Yum is ideal if you fancy a quick snack during a shopping trip, a romantic meal just the two of you or have an occasion to celebrate with a group of family or friends. The restaurant is centrally situated in the popular Hyde Park shopping centre; indeed, you can choose to sit inside or enjoy people watching in the central Plaza area.

The variety of dishes is wonderful, with Chinese, Japanese and Thai Fusion dishes all well represented. The key Asian flavours of sweet, sour, spicy and savoury are a consistent theme. The menu includes Asian style salads, aromatic curries and an extensive sushi menu; their sizzling beef is a treat and is delivered to your table, still sizzling, on a red hot wok! They do a mean Pad Thai too.

But it’s the Dim sum section of their menu and how they present it that got us curious. Dim sum has a strong Chinese heritage and consists of small bite-sized portions of food served in small steamer baskets or on small plates and is usually served during the day with tea. So Yum have taken this concept and adapted it for the South African gastronomy culture. Here, dim sum is served whenever you fancy it; with tea or without, during the afternoon and into the evening too! They, rightly, take considerable pride in their excellent dim sun menu; don’t miss the very popular signature dim sun dish of Hong Kong Pears.

Don’t forget the dessert menu too. They offer a tempting range that includes sorbets, cheesecake and the very-fun-sounding chocolate sesame balls! For drinks, there is a lovely range of aromatic teas available which are served in exclusively designed teapots with beautiful names to match; we like the sound of “Jasmine Fairy” and there’s an iced tea named “Falling in Love Again” – adorable! There’s a cocktail menu and the wine list is comprehensive with several available by the glass as well.

The waiters are polite and attentive, they are happy to offer recommendations and will check if you really mean it when you request “hot”! If you plan to watch a film at the cinema in the centre after your meal, just let them know and they’ll make sure you’re served extra-quickly.

For fresh, quality, wholesome Asian cuisine you can’t get better than So Yum.
