I was honoured to be chosen to nominate my choice of hotels for the category of Best Waterfront Hotel in North America on USA today. These hotels were selected by myself and four other travel experts, and I wanted to share my nominations in this category, as well as giving my own readers the chance to vote for their favourite waterfront hotel out of those nominated.
I picked a number of resorts that I just keep returning to. I absolutely love the recently refurbished Four Seasons Lanai which sits on the exclusive Hawaiian island of Lanai (pictured above). This resort has the most perfect and empty beach. In fact, because Lanai is less populated than many of the other Hawaiian islands, you can wander down to this beach at twilight, and you may well be the only one there. The hotel is stunning, with a beautiful pool overlooking the bay and a Nobu bar and restaurant, which is the perfect place for a meal and a nightcap. Of course, a man in traditional dress lights Tiki torches at this Four Seasons each evening, but our highlight on our last visit was to sit on the beach and watch the wild dolphins play close to the shore – magic, and so good that we will be returning soon.
Another particular favourite of mine is the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai Kailua-Kona in Hawaii. This hotel has wild turtles that will swim with you in the sea and come up and say hi on their beach; alfresco showers and Tikki lit evenings at the water’s edge. You can also take a trip to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and see the volcanoes erupting into the sea! Their Beach Tree Bar (pictured above) is a cracker and overlooks the ocean for perfect evening cocktails. In fact, it is right next to the sand so you can go for a late night paddle between sips – bliss!
Have your say. See all the nominations and have your say by casting your ballot on USA Today once per day until Wednesday, August 2 at noon ET. The 10 winning resorts, determined by your vote, will be announced on Friday, August 4.
