It’s a debate that has raged fiercely in the villa world for years and indeed every year, the seasonal title holders seem to be usurped by another claimant to the throne. The title of course is to be crowned Europe’s top villa. Without star gradings as in the hotel industry or any form of official grading at all in fact, it is frequently left to the customers themselves to define which are the best holiday villas or possibly better still, the rental agents that offer them.
How would one even define what makes a top villa – would it be an amazing panoramic view perhaps, or a glorious infinity pool that seems to merge with the seascape behind, or perhaps it is a state of the art villa with enough gadgets to make James Bond blush. Or even a glorious historical restoration, full of charm and ambience, the perfect spot for a romantic stay. The mind boggles…but to make the discussion considerably easier, we have hand picked our Top 10 for an unofficial roll call of Europes Elite…
A villa to come top of the pops in this company needs some serious clout and Villa C View does just that. Admittedly it has a price tag to match (strictly P.O.A. darling) but it comes with villa manager, housekeepers, chef and butler. As we rather like luxury and not having to do much on holiday (after all, why make hard work of doing things like having to uncork your own wine when someone will do it for you) we nominate Villa C View as #1.
A real headline act and a name to boot. Impresivan stands proudly overlooking the sea and is a modern marvel of comfort. Lord Bryons ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, which is Dubrovnik, is nearby, waiting for you to explore.
We love modern villas, but this one looks so futuristic it could well be off the latest sci-fi blockbuster. Wow your friends with where you are staying this year, or wander down to Pampelonne beach nearby, get photographed near someone famous and let them spot you in the fashion press. No mankinis.
This is one for the cultural purist. Spend your days driving over glaciers, witness geysers and waterfalls in the land of fire and ice, then relax with your personal chef doing the honours in the kitchen. After that, with hot chocolate in hand, sit back and watch the northern lights…ahhhh.
Staying in Spain, we get to the business end in the top 5. Casa de la Playa is a striking property with all the functions of a typical very high end villa. However check the location…right alongside the beach. Think you know a better positioned villa? Then let us know!
A stylish, first class villa. Just outside of town and a short distance from the beach, but the kicker: it comes complete with a chef. This is a place to soak up the sunshine, relax and let the staff take the strain. Call us lazy, but we love it.
The Algarve is blessed with fine villas. Villa Oliveto is a true trump card in the villa stakes in this area, with modern design and a stunning pool. However we are slightly biased – its right on the Millennium Golf Course. Enjoy heckling passing play, or indeed call up the caddy and join them.
Keeping with the Italian theme, this is Sicily at its finest. On a hidden strip of coastline away from the madding crowds, a short walk from a sandy beach and restaurants and bars, it has a location to dream of. The views from the covered terrace, enjoyed with a glass of Sicilian Nero D’ avola, are perfect.
Possibly with such a grand name as Poseidon, this particular villa should be eyeing up number 1 spot. The proximity to the esteemed town of Porto Cervo even more so. Enjoy laid back cool times on the pinkish white sand of Liscia Ruja beach before rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous at the yacht club.
Located on a picturesque part of the Dalmatian coast, sleeping just 8 persons, Villa Primorsko oozes contemporary chic design. However sometimes its all about location, location, location. Find yourself striding past the pool, down a couple of steps and right into the sea, its that close.
