Unless you fancy boiling up – literally sizzling up in the seawater around the black sand beaches of Kilauea, these beautiful beaches are best avoided.

What is so bad about these beaches? Well they are located in in Volcanoes National Park, and border one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mount Kilauea, which has been continuously spewing hot lava into the ocean since 1983. This means that lava literally drips into the sea so that the surrounding sea water boils.

If you are on the Hawaiian Islands we would instead pick one of the remote and beautiful beaches on Lanai, such as the secluded polihua beach or the curve of white sand on Manele Bay.
