Sometimes, the sea literally glows on the shoreline of Vaadhoo, Raa Atoll in the Maldives. But this is not an alien invasion or even dangerous. This watery luminescence is caused by microscopic bioluminescent phytoplankton. The chemical reaction, called bioluminescence, occurs when a micro-organism in sea water is disturbed by oxygen, so they give off light when they are agitated by the surf.

These pinpricks resemble stars in the surf and the phenomenon is simply magical.
