Continuing our series of top beaches and luxury hotels around the world, I pick the most romantic hotels in the world to spend Valentines. This review also takes into account the weather on Valentines day, which in Europe at least, is poor, so hotels that are massively romantic like the Grand Hotel Cap Ferrat, a Four Seasons hotel is not an option as it is shut! These hotels offer enough to do, indoors and outdoors, that if the weather is frightful, you will still have a delightful time!
Ahh Venice. If you want to impress your loved one, isn’t this the original city for lovers? The Aman Canal Grande Venice is an intimate retreat in the centre of Venice’s busy Canal Grande, protected from the madness of the city by palatial walls and a thick wooden door which only opens for those fortunate enough to enjoy temporary residency at this luxurious palace.
This palace couldn’t feel more extravagant. Historic rooms are complemented by lush deep pile rugs and suck-you-in sofas. Bedrooms are accessed via a maze of mind-boggling corridors, but you won’t mind getting lost, every new corridor and room you discover is a delight to behold, there’s always a seating area nearby inviting you to stop for a moment and take in the scene.
The rooms contrast to the elaborate communal areas by offering modern stark white with muslins softening the windows. A selection of stylish high-end pieces are set on the parquet floors, warmed with rugs that wae so thick and soft that you want to bury your feet in them.
The Aman Canal Grande venice is probably the finest hotel in Venice and if it was good enough for the Clooney’s wedding, it is also surely perfect for Valentines day!
In December, Sandals unveiled its first five all-inclusive over-the-water villas in Montego Bay, Jamaica. These romantic overwater bungalows in the Caribbean are the perfect choice for a long weekend in the sun and form the newest part of this luxury all-inclusive resort. There are 17 overwater bungalows and each comes with a private pool, Jacuzzi, glass floors, and a personal butler. The glass panels in the villas’ floors illuminate at night and show sea life swimming underneath. The deck boasts not only the small infinity pool but two outdoor showers, an oversized over-the-water hammock, chic white sun loungers and a shaded circular swing chair. The villas also have 24/7 room service and two dedicated butlers. They’ll even pack and unpack your suitcases or draw you a bath with petals and champagne.
Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara is paradise in the Middle East but only 25 minutes away from the main Qatar airport. A luxury catamaran or helicopter will whisk you across the crystal clear water to reach this breathtaking island.
For romance, choose one of the two-bedroom Over Water Villas. In the evenings, beds are scattered with rose petals. Lighting has 10 mood light settings and the towels are folded into different animal shapes; Kissing swans and even a grinning monkey can be found, all made out of towels.
You could do a layover or a long weekend in one of these overwater villas, the only doner is that the island is alcohol-free.
Yes, another Aman hotel makes it into my top 5. This one is in the American desert. Experience the earth’s beauty at its most basic form in this red-rock, rugged desert-scape. Beyond the few pine-clad mountains, there’s little vegetation in this vast arid region. The unique rock formations have been sculpted by time, water and wind. Visit the Arches National Park, the sheer-walled river gorges in the Canyonlands and the stunning buttes and mesas of Monument Valley.
Tucked into a protected valley with sweeping views towards the Grand Staircase, Amangiri is built around a central swimming pool with spectacular views. Blending with its dramatic surrounds of deep canyons and towering plateaus, this wilderness escape could not be more rugged. Amangiri’s Aman Spa features a floatation therapy pavilion, water pavilion with sauna, steam room, cold plunge and step pool, fitness centre and yoga pavilion. Sit under the desert stars next to the fire pit – magic.
Ride a camel or sip champagne while watching The Rock’s sunset glow, explore the mystical Kata, Uluru is all about romance and outback escapism. stay in a luxury tented pavilions floating over rust-red dunes. Enjoy the stillness and beauty in this desert landscape. Experience unparalleled views of fabled icon Uluru (Ayers Rock). This massive sandstone monolith in the heart of the Northern Territory’s arid “Red Centre” will offer Valantines-esque pink hued sunsets over this iconic red rock.
