Portland is a seaport and the largest city in the state of Oregon and if this is your base, here are some amazing weekend breaks offering the best of Oregon and beyond, into the sun kissed California.
Crater Lake Oregon
Crater Lake National Park is in the Cascade Mountains in the south of Oregon. Crater Lake, was formed by the now-collapsed volcano,The Mount Mazama and the reflections on this lake are hypnotic. Peer over the volcano rim and stare over to the magically named Wizard Island, which is actually the very tip of a slowly rising cinder cone in the centre of the lake. Due to the fog that forms in this area, the whole place is as mysterious as a Scooby Doo show.
Possibly the most breathtaking beach on the Oregon coast is Cannon Beach (pictured above) bordered by a pretty town. Wander around the town with touristy-but-nice art galleries and gift shops and then head out to walk across the sands and go for a paddle. Beyond the rock you can explore a number of rock pools packed with sea life like the adorable hermit crab or simply stroll into the sunset and marvel at the glories of nature.
Step back in time and absorb Oregon’s history in this beautiful city. Victorian mansions flank treelined streets and you can also investigate the setting of Mikey’s house from “The Goonies.” movie, a cult 1980’s hit. Astoria also sits on the Columbia River, offering a bunch of trips to appreciate this slow moving giant.
