Privacy, luxury and stunning surroundings; no wonder Calmada Private Resort in Southern California has a guest list that includes Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, The Cure, Clint Eastwood and Demi Moore. Set in 200 secluded acres the 5000 sq ft property is surrounded by desert and tucked behind rocks; meaning it’s hidden from the prying eyes of the paparazzi! And even if they are not on your tail, the peace that the setting brings is quite something. This is perfect hiking, riding or climbing territory; explore the Pioneertown Mountains and the Joshua Tree National Park. Flights from London to Palm Springs International Airport can take as little as 13.5 hours with a connection (British Airways flies via Phoenix), connection time from the airport is under an hour or Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is less than 2.5 hours away and there are many options for direct flights from the UK. Alternatively, the resort is just 45 minutes by helicopter from LA, an easy option with the private onsite heliport.
A peaceful, adult-only resort awaits nestled in a desert setting, surrounded by giant weathered boulders, ancient junipers, Joshua trees, cactus, olive trees and desert oaks. The resort is exquisitely decorated throughout, this is heaven for your Instagram feed! There are just 6 bedrooms, a pool and a wonderful chef waiting to feed you! Outside is a huge garden area that begs to be filled with parties, a pool and a large patio area with lots of places to sit and relax in the sunshine or shade. The owners ensure an extra personal touch, they are generous with check in and check out times, are ready with local recommendations and bookings, and will even assist with wedding planning should you wish to hold a special event at Calmada.
With just 6 unique and luxurious rooms to choose from, you can be sure of a rather special and ultra-glamourous space in which to rest your head. They are all designed by internationally acclaimed designer and owner, Chris Beaugrand and the attention to detail is evident throughout. As well as being simply giant rooms, they all have their own private bathrooms with showers. There is a glamour and beauty to all of the rooms and some have themes relevant to local or personal history, but my favourite room would have to be the master bedroom named Star; not only does it come with its own Jacuzzi but it is beautifully decorated with stars throughout. It’s possible to rent the whole house if you are staying with a group and taking over this whole space would be so much fun.
The resort’s chef is very well renowned, he specialises in both US and European cuisines, taking the best from each and adding an appropriate Southern flair. All ingredients are organic, natural and sustainable and everything is prepared from scratch and it’s definitely worth getting him to cater for you. There is also a fully equipped kitchen if you wish to self-cater. The infamous Pappy & Harriet’s live music and restaurant venue is only minutes away or for a more gourmet selection, downtown Palm Springs is just half an hour away.
Pool & Activities
Lazing by the pool or relaxing with a glass of wine in the gardens is more than enough for some visitors here. But there is plenty to explore locally too; hike or ride local public trails in the Pioneertown Mountains and the Joshua Tree National Park is only 15 minutes away; an amazing area for rock climbing. For more civilisation, the stylish city of Palm Springs is just half an hour away and is packed with golf courses, spas, restaurants and excellent shopping. Both Los Angeles and San Diego are just over two hours and half hours away and in the winter the Big Bear Ski Resort is worth a trip and is only an hour away.
Take a stroll at night, the lighting makes the place seem just magical and the stars are incredible with such low light pollution in the area.
For a touch of glamour in a secluded desert, the Calmada Private Resort in Southern California offers an exceptional stay; if it’s good enough for the celebs who frequent it, it’s probably good enough for us!
